My dog has a mild dry cough but is acting normal. Should I worry?

It sounds like Tucker is quite lethargic. I'd keep an eye on him now since he is otherwise acting normal. If this lethargy continues tomorrow and/or he develops other signs such as vomiting, anorexia, congestion, increased coughing, respiratory difficulty, and/or sneezing, then I would take him into the vet. I always think a cough is worth evaluating. Some reasons are more benign than others, but it is always a good idea to know why your dog is coughing so you can be aware of how it may progress and prevent future problems. The first step is to have your veterinarian examine Scooter and take x-rays of his chest. It could be kennel cough, scratch in the throat from chewing on hard objects or swelling in the throat from being stung in the throat by an insect. As long as your dog is acting as normal, eating food and keeping it down you should monitor him at home. Kennel cough symptoms usually resolve within 7-10 days without treatment. However, if your dog continues to cough or becomes lethargic and off food, you should get him checked by your local vets.

I would recommend that you have Buzi examined by a vet. Benign coughs will run their course in a couple days, and only severe coughs usually need treatment. Pugs are prone to respiratory issues, and as they age, they can develop heart or lung disease that can cause a cough. A vet will do a thorough examination and may recommend x-rays to visualize the heart and lungs. Once scary things are ruled out, they can ok cough suppressants or other medications if needed.

With his consistent symptoms, I recommend having him seen by the vet. There are many causes of respiratory symptoms, including heart disease, and I’m a bit concerned about his decreased exercise tolerance. This could be an upper respiratory infection such as kennel cough , but could also be a sign of heart disease, especially if Chico is an older dog. Another very likely possibility is that Chico has a collapsed trachea. You will need to take Chico to your vet for an exam and x-rays (which will rule out collapsed trachea and lung edema caused by congestive heart failure).
