Is pet microchipping or neutering safe? What's the process like?

Microchips are very safe. They are inserted under the loose skin above the shoulders with a large hypodermic needle. It's over and done very quickly, just a few seconds. Most cats grumble or hiss, but it is over with very fast. Most microchips implanted today do not migrate under the skin but remain where placed. Anyone administering a microchip is familiar with the method of inserting it properly.

The microchip should be implanted under the skin between the shoulder blades. Rarely the microchip can migrate under the skin to the side of the chest or down by the sternum, but this does not cause any medical problems and is of no consequence to your pet at all. It sounds like poor Petie has been through a lot in his young age! Although any anesthetic carries risks, neutering is typically a very safe procedure. It's a surgery that vets do all the time, and it's low risk. There is a very good change he can be neutered without anything happening, but unfortunately I cannot 100% guarantee that everything will be ok (you can never guarantee that with any surgery). With any surgery there is always a risk of death. But in most animals spay or neuter is a relatively safe procedure. Some things can be done to make it safer. Discuss with your vet about doing preanesthetic bloodwork, having an IV catheter and IV fluids during the procedure. If a pet does die it may depend on the clinic if they have options for cremation or burial or have your take a body home. Unfortunately, it's nearly impossible to remove a microchip, so that cannot be done. As for deactivating it, it's not an active item. It simply has a serial number that can be read by a scanner, and then the vet enters that serial number into a computer database to find the owner's information. I'm not sure what research you have done about it, but microchips are very safe. I truly caution about believing things found on the internet, as it's typically anecdotal evidence and not scientific evidence. Vets would not recommend a microchip if it were terrible or harmful to the animal, and I would trust your vet over things you read from sources on the internet. Your vet is the expert. Usually neuter surgeries go without complications although like with any surgeries animals can have complications from being under anesthesia. It is recommended to avoid him getting to the incision to avoid delayed healing. You can do this by using an e-collar which you can obtain from your veterinarian or local pet store. Sometimes non-steroidal anti-inaflammarory drugs are used for a few days after surgery. Good luck!
