My stray dog has mastitis. Will spaying help her recover?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | unspayed | 40 lbs

Elisa is a fearful stray dog(runs if try to touch her) that gave birth to 6 puppies in my street. I’ve been feeding Elisa and giving puppy formula to the puppies for the last 3 weeks since Elisa refuse to allow the pups to nurse. A rescue group told me she has Mastitis and urged me to have her spayed ASAP since she could die. The vet gave me a sleeping pill for her to get her spayed in 2 mnth, but the doctors from my area don’t care much for stray dogs. Would spaying her help her with mastitis?

No spaying won't cure the mastitis. Mastitis is an infection of the mammary glands, and it can be fatal without treatment. You are so lovely for feeding these puppies, and I hope you find them homes. You need to see if there is a vet who will treat her mastitis now. See if the rescue group can help you find a vet. Best of luck.
