Will dog mast cell tumor surgery affect his ability to walk well?

Skin grafting can be tricky and there is a high risk that the graft would fail, especially when it is applied to an area where there previously was cancer. Mast cell tumors require 2 to 3cm margins and on the leg, many times, this is unachievable. Amputation is likely the best option. Surgery to remove a peripheral lymph node is not any more invasive than the surgery to remove a mast cell tumor on the skin. I'm assuming this lymph node is one that is near his shoulder or behind his knee. This could provide valuable information, because additional treatment would be recommended if cancerous mast cells are confirmed in the lymph node even though the initial biopsy came back as a low grade tumor that is less likely to spread. Hello. I am sorry your dog has some tumors. If your dog has tumors on the inside of the legs, it depends on what types of tumors if it will cause pain or not. I recommend having your dog seen by a vet to assess the tumors, as they may need to be surgically removed, or there may be medications that can help. I understand wanting alternative therapy but with a mast cell tumor I do recommend surgery as that can often cure dogs with a localized mast cell tumor. My dog had several and they never returned after surgery. As far as light therapy it is not recommended. The light can speeed up the cell metabolism and in theory cause the cancer cells to divide and spread faster. I use cold laser light therapy in my practice and it is contraindicated to use it around any areas that may be cancerous. Yes, continue with the supplements. If they did a needle aspirate they may be able to grade the tumor to see how aggressive it is. Some mast cell tumors are slow growing and may not need surgical removal. Since both the tumors were low grade and have not yet metastasized there is no indication to worry about an abbreviated life span at this time. Since your dog is so young and has already had 2 MCTs he will likely have more pop up in the future. It's important to have any little lump or bump you find on him to be checked out by your vet. The sooner they are removed, the less likely they are to spread.

It's a bit of a tough call, but I can see 2 potential options. You could have your vet take the tumor with conservative margins - i.e. leave enough to keep the penis covered - then biopsy that in order to get the grade of the tumor, so that you know what you're dealing with. After that, you might elect chemotherapy, or as you say simply monitor the site, since many are low grade. Your other option would be to consider a course of Palladia, which is a chemotherapeutic drug that is often used in mast cell tumors. It can significantly shrink them, so that they are easier to remove with margins.
