My dog has tumors on his back legs. Will walking cause him pain?

It depends how deep the tumors go, if they are superficial the surgery will definitely not affect his walking ability. not removing these tumors is pretty much a death sentence to your dog so i don't see any alternative to the surgery anyway.

I am very sorry to hear about your dog. What you are describing sounds like most likely a tumor. There are many different types of tumors. Two of the more common we see in this area are lipomas, which are fatty tumors and feel soft/squishy, and sarcomas which are firmer feeling. Unfortunately it sounds like this is large and causing her problems. She needs a visit to the vet's office to examine the tumor and see if it can be surgically removed. They may want to take an x-ray and may want to do what is called a "fine needle aspirate" to collect cells to try to identify the type of tumor before surgery.

Please make an appointment to have Tammh seen by a vet as soon as possible. She is likely in pain, and may have a muscular or nerve injury, a fractured bone, a mass, or a foreign body in the leg. Your vet can assess the leg during the physical exam and may recommend x-rays to help determine the cause of Tammh’s limp. Pain medications meant for humans can be very dangerous (and even deadly) for dogs, so I do not recommend giving any to Tammh without consulting with your vet.

Hi there. A close up picture (or even better several) of your dog st different angles would help us to get a better idea of what you're dealing with. While cancer has to be diagnosed in person in a clinic with several types of diagnostic testing-Lucky could just have fatty tumors which are usually benign until they grow so large they press on a nerve, etc. We would need a bit more information before we could help you more accurately. Poor Alfie. I would be concerned that the cancer may be starting to come back in that area. It could be affected his nerves in that leg which is causing him to limp or drag his leg. I would have your vet take a look at it to see if he can see or feel anything. Your vet may want to take some x-rays to see if there is any boney involvement. Your vet will also be able to prescribe him some appropriate pain meds to make him more comfortable. I do not recommend giving human pain meds as most are toxic to dogs. I hope this helps!

Sorry to here that Kemo is having some troubles. There are many things that can cause pain in dogs. Some of them include trauma, degenerative diseases, inflammatory conditions, spinal issues, cancers, clotting disorders, and some others that are less common. In a small breed dog of about six years, my top two differentials would be some sort of traumatic event (that could have happened when you were not around) or an issue with the back. Many times when dogs are lifted and they yelp, it is a spinal problem causing some pretty severe discomfort. If you have ever had back pain yourself, you know just how uncomfortable this can be. Based on the severity and progression of the problems, I would say that Kemo definitely needs a visit to the vet sometime soon. They will be able to perform a thorough physical, and based on the findings, determine if x-rays are warranted. They will be able to target what part of the body requires x-rays. There are many medications available to treat inflammatory conditions and trauma, as well as pain associated with the back and spine. I hope you are able to work through things with your vet to resolve Kemo's pain.

Tumors which appear as lumps and bumps on the skin or can be felt or seen but are just under the skin are common with age; some are benign and not problematic, while some can be life threatening. Lipomas are common, which are usually relatively soft, freely movable under the skin (you can push it around) and are non painful. Generally these are slow growing, they do not cause cancer elsewhere in the body (though its very common for a dog to have multiple lipoma tumors) and rarely cause a problem. Mast cell tumors, on the other hand, can be aggressive and can cause systemic illness. They can look like lipomas; the only way to know the difference is for your vet to perform a fine needle aspirate (where they will poke the bumps with a needle to get a sample of the cells and then look at them under a microscope. Other skin tumors can include squamous cell carcinomas which can be very locally invasive and aggressive, and grow quickly. Keep an eye on the lumps and bumps. If any of them are quickly growing, start to break open or bleed, or any of them are painful when touched, he should be seen by a vet. A golfball sized tumor is immensely easier to remove than a football sized one--so addressing a lump when its small is much better Grady and also will cost less than waiting until its very large.
