My dog has new lumps after spaying. Could they be mast cell tumors?

Sometimes you can see these masses that are almost like extra, under developed teats. I recommend to as your vet if they think that's what these are. It doesn't look like a MCT, but they can take on different appearances. It maybe a benign growth or skin tag. The only way to find out would be to have Buddy examined by your veterinarian. A fine needle aspirate can be done in the clinic to collect samples for pathology. This may provide a diagnosis. In the meantime, monitor it for rapid change or growth. If the margins were clean (meaning all of the cancerous cells were removed), then the mass should not recur. However, mast cell tumors are one of the more unpredictable types of cancer. I recommend closely monitoring his incision site at home for any regrowth. It is best to see his veterinarian at least every 6 months for an examination. At this visit a thorough physical examination will be performed to search for other masses or enlarged lymph nodes. Blood work should be monitored as well. Unfortunately, there is nothing that you or your veterinarian can do to prevent further growths from forming. If any new new growth is observed, a fine needle aspirate should be performed as soon as possible to determine the type of mass. Thank you for providing a picture of Mabel's incision! This small lump could be a local tissue reaction from an internal suture, scar tissue, a seroma (fluid in the dead space from a surgery), or a cyst. I'm not sure if the lump is hard or soft. The incision itself looks like it healed beautifully, but i would have this lump checked out by the vet to be safe. The vet can diagnose what is causing it and if it needs any treatment. From the picture, that looks like a suture reaction, which is common a month or two out from surgery as the internal suture material is dissolving. If there is no discharge and it's not warm to the touch, and she's otherwise normal, it shouldn't need medical attention. However if it starts to bleed or have discharge, take her in for a check up

It's difficult to recognize mast cells as abnormal on cytologic evaluation. Usually, when a mast cell tumor has metastasized to the spleen, there is a nodule in the spleen that can be visualized with ultrasound or at surgery. Just taking a random aspirate of the spleen and finding normal mast cells does not necessarily prove metastasis, but a recheck ultrasound in 3 months should be helpful if you are still concerned.

I would be concerned that the swelling is another mammary mass or lymph node from the mammary area. Unfortunately, needle aspirates on mammary cells can be hard to determine if malignant or not. I would recommend taking Aries in to your vet tomorrow to discuss the next steps. I think your vet will also suggest chest xrays to make sure there is no evidence of cancer in her lungs.
