My Labrador has a lump on its side. When should I see a vet?

Hello I have an English black lab named spider and he had one big lump and one small lump on the left side of his body. What should I do?

Hello and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I can definitely see the lumps on Spider's side that you are talking about. They do not appear to be bleeding or have any discharge or inflammation, so I can guess that they are not bothering Spider. It is hard to get a good idea of their size from the pictures, but they do not appear very large. You have several options in this case - you can either continue to monitor the lumps for any change in size or development of discharge/redness (having them evaluated by a veterinarian if any of those signs occur) or you can have him seen by a veterinarian as soon as possible. Having him evaluated shortly will allow Spider to have a better prognosis if the lumps are masses, as they can be removed and sent of to a laboratory for a definitive diagnosis and treatment options.

My puppy has fatty lumps on his side. Do I need to see a vet urgently?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! These could be benign or malignant growths. Him being a puppy, this could also be a normal accumulation of fat or tissue. There is no way of knowing for sure without an examination though this represents a reason to seek veterinary care. This is usually determined with an examination and a fine needle aspirate (FNA) or a biopsy. Treatment depends on the findings up to that point. I recommend you have him evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Good luck and have a good night!

My dog has a growing, bleeding lump on her head. Should I see a vet?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I think you should have this checked. The fact that it was previously known to be benign, does not mean that now it cannot be malignant. If it has gotten bigger, it would be great to sample it again. I recommend you have Lily evaluated by your veterinarian for a test called fine needle aspirate which is an easy, quick and pain-free procedure which in the majority of cases will help reach a diagnosis to identify what the best course of action is based on the findings. In some cases, a biopsy is needed for a diagnosis. If it truly is benign then removal is not necessarily recommended. However, if it is malignant and it has not spread to other locations, then surgical removal is recommended. Good luck! Keeping my fingers crossed that it is something benign.

My dog has a large, growing lump. Should I take him to the vet?

This could be a seroma from an injury, a cyst, abscess or a tumor. Cysts and abscesses need to be drained by a vet. If your vet suspects a tumor, he will do a fine needle aspirate to determine whether it is a harmless lipoma, which does not need to be removed unless it is ulcerating or bothers the dog due to its location or size, or another tumor that needs to be removed. Please make an appointment with your veterinarian for an exam of the mass.

Should the lump get bigger, starts to bother him, he has trouble eating, becomes lethargic, or anorexic, then I would rush into an ER vet right away. The picture is hard to make out but based on location I would say these are perianal tumours. You should get them checked out asap. The vet will likely have to test them to determine if they are benign or cancerous and then will be able to advise you on the best course of action. Try not to worry about them until you have spoken to the vet.

Why does my 7-month-old black lab have a small white lump?

Hi there and thank you for using Pet Coach! It is difficult to say what the growth you are seeing is since there are no pictures. Seeing that Carl is quite a young dog, I would suspect what you are seeing is benign. Many times in dogs this young when we see a mass it is likely a papilloma secondary to exposure to the papilloma virus or a histiocytoma. Both of these typically resolve on their own and will occasionally need surgical intervention for removal. If the mass is not going away on its own or is multiplying in number, I would have this examined by a veterinarian and have further testing performed to help further determine what this could be so that the most appropriate treatment can be recommended.
