My dog has a lump. Is it safe to wait until tomorrow for the vet?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | 30 lbs

It's seems that my dog may have a salivary cysts. The vet can see her at 5p today. Or 9a tomorrow. I have an important dinner to go at 5p. I know these situations are time sensitive but What are the chances of it worsening over night? She is 12 years old.

Hi there and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern. This may not be a salivary gland issue and may be an infection or other cause. If you knew for sure 100% that this was a salivary gland issue, waiting until the morning would be ok. But because the cause is not known, I would recommend getting this looked at sooner. The sooner antibiotics are given for a possible infection , the better. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction. I would also check blood work to make sure there are no systemic changes that are concerning. Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns.

If an abscess is ruled out, your veterinarian can perform a fine needle aspirate of the lump to collect samples for pathology. This may provide a diagnosis. My dog has a soft lump under its jaw overnight. What should I do?

Good morning. If it is towards the back of the jaw it could be an enlarged lymph node or salivary gland. Other possible causes are an abscess or tumor. In young dogs we see a lot of abscesses in that area because they are chewing on sticks or other things and they can puncture the oral tissue and cause an abscess under the jaw. I would highly encourage you to have him evaluated by your veterinarian soon. A needle aspirate may be done to help determine the diagnosis and treatment plan. This could be a tooth root abscess or a swelling from an insect bite or a salivary gland problem. Unless you think this is very painful, there is really nothing you can or need to do. If Chelsea appears in a lot of pain you may want to take her to a vet tonight, but if she is comfortable, then there is nothing you need to do.

My dog has a painful lump. Is it an emergency or can it wait?

I think this is not an emergency and can wait to be seen tomorrow. The only thing that may happen is that this abscess bursts until then. If that happens, gently wipe off the pus, do not flush or put ointment on the wound, leave it as it is. It is likely painful at the moment, but once the abscess bursts the pain will be over. Your vet will lance and flush the abscess and prescribe an antibiotic if needed.

As long as it isn't bothering Chinook, it's ok to wait until Monday to get this area tested through your vet. Best case scenario is that this is a benign tumor that isn't of concern for your pet. It could be an abscess, an enlarged lymph node, or an enlarged salivary gland. My dog's cheek is swollen. Is it a tooth abscess? Can he wait for vet?

This is definitely suspicious of an abscess. I've also seen trauma (hit their face on something hard) cause fluid swelling that looks the same, so hopefully this is the case rather than an abscess. Either way, it's not an emergency and he is safe to wait until morning to see the vet. I hope that helps and Ace gets better soon.
