My dog has a lump at the injection site after shots. Is it serious?

That is a very common occurrence after vaccination. The vaccine can cause a localized reaction and it should resolve on its own within a month. If it persists, seems larger, or bothers him that have your vet take a look at it.

I'm sorry but I'll need a bit more information to be helpful: 1) what injection did Cookie receive? 2) where is the post injection swelling? 3) What does it look like? 4) How is Cookie acting in regards to the swelling Some vaccinations cause harmless lumps that go away, specifically the Rabies. If the swelling has ruptured the best thing to do is use an Elizabethan collar (cone) or donut to prevent her from licking, shave the fur away, clean it with warm water and a gentle soap twice daily and apply a triple antibiotic ointment. It certainly is possible to see swellings at injection sites, but 2.5 weeks later is a longer period of time than we will commonly see before a swelling will appear. If there is any possibility that Emmett was bit or injured at that location, I would certainly be worried that it could be an infection at that site (despite the antibiotics). If the swelling is getting larger, I would recommend having your veterinarian examine it. If it is a swelling from one of the injections, it should gradually get smaller and should not be painful. It is possible that Trixie is having some inflammation associated with the shot she was given. This inflammation may take several months to resolve. If you are very worried you can take her to the vet, where they may be able to look at some of the cells present in the lump. Otherwise, you can monitor at home. If the lump does not resolve in a month or two, I recommend bringing her to the vet at that time.

Many injections can cause temporary lumps which are generally painless and resolve over 4-6weeks. If there is any discomfort or heat in the area or it does not reduce over time you should have it checked by your vet to rule out more sinister causes

Given the location, it could be a tooth root abscess. It isn't an emergency, but is likely uncomfortable. If Dolly is behaving normally, she can probably see her veterinarian in the morning. An oral exam can be done to determine if there is periodontal disease and if so, if it is severe enough to cause an abscess. A complete dental cleaning and possibly extractions may be necessary. If an abscess is ruled out, your veterinarian can perform a fine needle aspirate of the lump to collect samples for pathology. This may provide a diagnosis. Treatment options can be discussed once results are returned.

Hi there! I'm sorry to hear about Bruce's lump. Vaccinations can definitely leave behind a small bump at times. If this happens after I vaccinate a dog, I will have the client bring their pet in so I can examine the spot, make sure that it coincides with where I gave the vaccine for sure. If it is something new rather than a lump from the vaccine, it can be addressed accordingly. As long as it is just from the vaccine, then we monitor the spot over the course of a few weeks. If it is a localized inflammatory response to the vaccine, it usually will go away over time. If it persists, some clients will opt to have me remove the tiny lump and test it to make sure it just comes back as an inflammatory response and not something serious. I would definitely call your veterinarian and have Bruce get a quick examination to make sure all is well, and you will likely just monitor the lump going forward.
