My dog's lump was removed. Is waiting weeks for biopsy results safe?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 9 years and 3 months old | 4 lbs

She had this bump removed the 18th & I paid for it to get sent off today. They said I’ll have the results in a few weeks. Is it okay to wait that long? Maybe it is becuase im hoping it has a good chance to be benign since it’s been there since June of last year, only grew a little, never caused any problems, & she never bothered it. She’s healing well. It also seemed to shrink after the needle aspiration. Vet couldn’t tell what it was. I’ll include pictures of all stages

As the lump as already been removed, it is quite safe to wait that long, the main reason for sending it to the lab is for you to know if it is a benign tumor or a malignant tumor, if it is a malignant tumor, the prognosis will not be good, even if the lump has been removed cleanly. if it is benign then you have very little to worry about.

If the lum has not gotten bigger and remains stable in size and character, I think it is safe to wait until the 18th for removal. Your veterinarian is likely concerned the mass is cancerous. Therefore she is likely recommending removal for a better diagnosis. It really could be anything, from an infected cancerous mass or an infected benign mass. Removal of the mass and sending it for histopathology would be the gold standard for diagnosis and prognosis.

My pet had a bump removed. Why do biopsy results take so long?

How far away you live from the laboratory could be a reason but usually once it arrives to the laboratory it takes an average of 5-7 days. You can always have your veterinarian expedite it. My dog's lump had no liquid on needle test. Should I wait or remove?

It could be that Kuba had a cyst, which is why it was removed (they can grow back even after being drained). This new lump could be another cyst, a lipoma (benign fatty tumor), a benign tumor, or a malignant tumor. Because I can't see him in person, I can't say for certain what this lump is, and I would follow your vet's recommendation to watch it for now. Wait and see if it grows bigger, and if it does, then I would talk to the vet about getting it removed.

My dog has lumps, vet suggested surgery. Is removal necessary?

I am assuming that your vet did a needle aspirate and wasn't able to get a diagnosis. The only way to know the cause of the lumps would be to remove them and submit to a lab for biopsy. As long as he is otherwise healthy then the risk of anesthesia is low. If he needs a dental cleaning then your vet could do both at the same time. If you don't want to have them removed then you could monitor for a month or so and see how the lumps change. If they are growing then they really should be removed.

My dog has a lip lump, biopsy results are late. What can I do for her?

For now i would not recommend touching it, it's a very problematic location to put anything topical on as she is likely to lick it right away. you need to wait patiently for the biopsy results, as it has been already a week i would recommend calling your vet in order to ask if the results are in already.

Can a vet tell what a pet's lump is without sending it to a lab?

Thank you for your question. The answer is dependent on the growth found. The only growth that would commonly not be recommended for biopsy/that is more easily identified just based on visual appearance would be a lipoma, or fatty tumor https://veterinarypartner.vin.com/default.aspx?pid=19239&id=5233990 . Most other growths would be sent out unless a previous aspirate was done to determine the type of growth. Otherwise, it is not possible just by gross (with the naked eye) examination to determine the origin of a tumor.

My dog had a black lump removed after grooming. Scar or cancer?

There are many reasons lumps can develop and not all are cancerous; the fact he is normal in every other way is very positive and I would also recommend waiting for the pathologists report before trying to guess what might be going on - most reports are back with 10-14days. The dark color, although often a concern does not automatically mean there is anything sinister going on and can be related to a previous bleed, blood vessel swelling or a foreign body reaction amongst other things
