Why is my dog's heartbeat so loud I can hear it from a distance?

When my dog is really really excited you can hear her heartbeat from a few meters away. Normally you can't hear it at all. Is it normal to be able to hear a dogs heartbeat from a distance?

I have been practicing veterinary medicine for 17 years and have never experienced or heard of another person hearing their dog’s heartbeat from a few meters away. So the answer to your question, in my opinion, is that this is abnormal.

What worries me most is the age of the dog and the fact that she is still young. Puppies her age can be born with congenital heart diseases that can cause significant heart murmurs. A heart murmur is an abnormal sound given off by the heart that is due to abnormal blood flow through the heart.

I strongly encourage you to take her to a veterinarian as early as convenient and have the following things done: A complete physical examination including cardiac auscultation, an EKG, and possibly chest x-rays just to make sure that she is OK and that this abnormal loud heartbeat you are hearing is normal.

Hello. The normal heartbeat of a dog should be around 120-160 beats per minute. If his heartrate is greater than 200 beats per minute at rest or when sleeping, this is abnormal & could be due to a conduction disorder in the heart. He may also have an abnormal rhythm that mimics a elevated heart rate. The only way to sort out what might be happening is to have your veterinarian auscultate his heart & possibly do any ECG to identify the rate & any rhythm abnormalities. My dog's heart is beating fast all night. Is this an emergency?

You should get your dog seen by our veterinarian right away. Rapid heartbeat in dogs could indicate that he is in pain, has heat disease, an electrolyte imbalance or another hidden condition. Left untreated it can lead to injury of the heart itself and/or congestive heart failure. Your vet will do an exam, blood work and x-rays to determine the cause of the illness and suggest an effective treatment plan.

Why is my dog losing weight with a fast heart and a hissing sound?

From this description, I'm worried about a heart murmur. An heart murmur is turbulent blood flow in the heart and if it's severe enough you can actually hear it or feel it from the outside. This can lead to congestive heart failure. I would recommend scheduling a vet appointment tomorrow morning, or going to an emergency clinic if he is breathing rapidly (more than 30 breaths a minute while resting) very lethargic, or his gums look pale. Why does my dog's heart beat super fast when excited or playing?

It's normal to see this increase, and in some dogs, it may be super fast and hard. Why is my 8-week puppy's sleeping heart rate low and belly hard?

This is a little lower than what I would consider typical, but this might be normal for this dog when she is completely asleep and relaxed. Typically puppies her age tend to have a heart rate fairly similar to an adults although it can be a little faster, and heart rates are usually much faster at a veterinary hospital where there is stress and excitement. You may be feeling her spleen or other normal organs on one side of her belly compared to the other. If she is otherwise acting like a normal puppy I would recommend mentioning the belly and low heart rate at her next vaccine appointment. The veterinarian can listen to her heart for murmurs or arrhythmias and feel her belly.
