My dog's heart sounds like a balloon bursting. Is this normal?

I have been practicing veterinary medicine for 17 years and have never experienced or heard of another person hearing their dog’s heartbeat from a few meters away. So the answer to your question, in my opinion, is that this is abnormal. What worries me most is the age of the dog and the fact that she is still young. Puppies her age can be born with congenital heart diseases that can cause significant heart murmurs. A heart murmur is an abnormal sound given off by the heart that is due to abnormal blood flow through the heart. I strongly encourage you to take her to a veterinarian as early as convenient and have the following things done: A complete physical examination including cardiac auscultation, an EKG, and possibly chest x-rays just to make sure that she is OK and that this abnormal loud heartbeat you are hearing is normal. From this description, I'm worried about a heart murmur. An heart murmur is turbulent blood flow in the heart and if it's severe enough you can actually hear it or feel it from the outside. This can lead to congestive heart failure. I would recommend scheduling a vet appointment tomorrow morning, or going to an emergency clinic if he is breathing rapidly (more than 30 breaths a minute while resting) very lethargic, or his gums look pale. You should not be able to hear your puppy's heart beat without putting your ear on his chest. If it is so loud that you can hear it that loud, you should have him examined by your veterinarian as Caspy may have a congenital heart defect. Only a hands-on exam can evaluate your dog's heart and determine whether the heart is normal.

This could be abnormal but keep in mind that this may also be normal. You should get your dog seen by our veterinarian right away. Rapid heartbeat in dogs could indicate that he is in pain, has heat disease, an electrolyte imbalance or another hidden condition. Left untreated it can lead to injury of the heart itself and/or congestive heart failure. Your vet will do an exam, blood work and x-rays to determine the cause of the illness and suggest an effective treatment plan.

Depending on the underlying cause, a murmur may intensify quickly. A murmur is an abnormal heart sound, it is not an accurate indicator of heart function. To accurately evaluate cardiac function, you would need to have an echocardiogram (ultrasound of the heart) performed on Muff. Your veterinarian may do this or may refer you to a veterinary cardiologist.

In a dog Bailey's age, yes there is a chance it could be heart failure . You will need to take her into the vet now. The vet can do a physical exam and x-rays to see how her heart is working, and if she is in heart failure, the vet can prescribe medication to manage her symptoms. Best of luck.
