My dog lost a tooth in a fight. Is it vital to see a vet right away?

HI and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I would definitely see your veterinarian in the morning however she is likely in pain if she has broken a tooth. I would recommend seeking emergency veterinary care for at least pain control tonight if she is uncomfortable, lethargic, salivating a lot, whining or vomiting. If you think her signs are mild, then you can probably monitor her and see your normal vet in the morning. Good luck!

I'm sorry to hear that! If its a large cheek tooth, or a canine tooth, try to get her in sooner than Saturday if at all possible. If its an incisor (one of the small teeth in the front) its probably fine to wait that long. In the meantime, offer her soft food, or moisten her dry food with water or chicken broth. You can use a dog oral rinse if you want to be proactive about it, but I don't think its entirely necessary. Whether or not specific treatment will be needed depends on what tooth it was and the extent of damage at the gumline. If there is a concern that the root fractured, or if the defect is quite large, surgery may be needed. If she seems to be painful or isn't eating anything, take her in as soon as you can. If they fell out completely and they are not broken (you can check if there is any remnant there) a check up generally speaking would not be needed. Soft food would be a good idea even though if you tell us exactly which teeth were injured we can give you more specific advices. Phoebe must be in pain so a check up would be ideal to have some pain meds prescribed. If there is any piece of tooth still in there, then a check up for extraction is required.

If it won’t come out or he won’t left you, just leave it alone until tomorrow. Make an appointment with your vet tomorrow to make sure no root remains. If he wants to eat tonight, he can but I wouldn’t feed him in the morning in case the vet needs to sedate him for an oral exam. Water is ok to give. They may fall out on their own, however, they should be removed by your veterinarian to prevent further pain. Ideally, dental x-rays should be done to confirm no remnants of the roots remain. This could lead to infection. Additionally, he is likely very painful and should get some form of prescription pain medication. If your veterinarian is unavailable, consider a visit to the nearest veterinary ER. Antibiotics may also be indicated.

I recommend making an appointment with your vet when they open to take a look at it. Though she isn’t acting painful, it may become painful or infected. There isn’t anything you can do at home and no safe medications you can give for pain. If it is broken, she will likely need to undergo anesthesia to have the tooth removed. Hello. That tooth probably should come out, even though it is a puppy tooth, but you can wait until Friday as long as Luna does not seem uncomfortable. . Your veterinarian might just leave it be, but there is a small chance of infection that can get into the root & then the bone causing problems with the adult tooth.
