Why is my dog losing fur in chunks, has bald spots, and is so itchy?

If you are seeing flea dirt on Bruce then it's likely with hair loss and based on those pictures that he has flea allergy dermatitis. However, There are other causes of these changes that include food and environmental allergies. I'd recommend taking Bruce to see your veterinarian as it is common to have secondary bacterial skin infections with flea allergy dermatitis. You will also need to use a quality flea preventative like Bravecto, Revolution, or Advantix. Flea preventative should be consistent as it can take as many as 6 months for fully eradicate a flea problem. Hello. We will often see some subtle indications of a bacterial infection under the hair, especially after long or thick hair has been shaved off. You can bathe Bruce in any OTC antibacterial shampoo ( either with benzyl peroxide or chlorhexidine ) twice a week for 2-3 weeks & this should take care of the problem. I would recommend starting a shampoo such as Douxo PS chlorhexidine combination shampoo and bathe twice weekly. I would also recommend welactin omega 3 fish oil, essential 6 spot on by dermoscent and malacetic conditioning spray. It is hard to say for sure without pictures being unable to examine him. I would recommend a chlorhexidine based shampoo such as Douxo PS chlorhexidine combination shampoo and bathe twice weekly until the infection is resolved. A spray such as malacetic conditioning spray should also be used and applied to the affected area 2-3 times daily until resolved. These can be found online quite easily and if you are unable to get these delivered to your area, something comparable should suffice. Itchy skin and hair loss is often due to the following things: 1) Allergies - this can happen suddenly and is usually due to an environmental (i.e pollen) cause. 2) External parasites - fleas, lice and mites can all cause intense itching. It's good to check him for fleas and get treatment if needed. The permethrin shampoo is only temporary, so it's possible that he is getting re- infested. He may have mites, which are microscopic and require a vet to find. 3) Over-bathing, or using the wrong product for bathing - Bathing too often can cause the skin to get dry and irritated. Dogs should normally be bathed no more than once a month with a shampoo that is labeled for dogs. If you bathe more than that, or use a shampoo or soap that is meant for people, then you could be damaging the normal protective barrier of the skin. One thing you can do for itchy skin, is give a bath with cool water using an oatmeal or aloe shampoo. You can get these shampoos at the pet store. I hope this helps you to identify the problem. There are some things that you can do at home if you are unable to get to a vet right away. I would suggest starting with a shampoo that is medicated such as Duoxo chlorhexidine PS combination and bathe him twice weekly until the infection is resolved. I would also suggest starting welactin omega-3 fish oil and essential 6 Spot On by dermoscent. If there is no improvement then I would see your vet for further testing and treatments. Brutus could be suffering from a skin allergy or other primary skin condition such as seborrheic dermatitis. I would recommend the below following products, which can all be found online quite easily. I would use these for at least 4-6 weeks before considering something else. This could potentially be related to the diet as well. If there is no improvement with the products below, I would recommend a diet trial with one of the foods listed below as well.
