Why is my dog losing balance and falling when peeing? Knee issue?

I'm so sorry to hear that Trick has hip dysplasia. I would not recommend waiting to have Trick seen by a veterinarian. Hip dysplasia does not normally cause falling when lifting a leg to urinate, so Trick may have something else going on that requires treatment. If Trick is already having hip problems and is only 4 years old, then he likely needs additional treatment to prevent severe problems in the near future. What you're describing sounds like a condition called a luxating patella. This is when the knee cap slides in and out of its groove. This condition overtime can lead to arthritis and potential he predispose a dog to tearing a ligament in the knee. Your veterinarian maybe to do an orthopedic exam and tell you if this is the case.

He may have an orthopedic problem like hip dysplasia or a torn cruciate ligament in his knee, a soft tissue injury like a sprain or pulled muscle, or some type of neurologic problem. I would recommend taking him to the vet to have this checked. He/she can do a complete orthopedic exam and may also take x-rays if needed to help diagnose the problem.
