Why are my dog's long nails chipping and hurting her paw pads?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 8 years and 6 months old | 4 lbs

Can nails begin to chip if they grow too long? I noticed that some of her nails have begin to chip at the ends. She hasn't had them clipped since around may. We also have hardwood floors & she's always jumping from one place to the other & running a lot too. One of them also curves a bit & has made of of her paw pads start to peel

Yes. Sometimes the edges chip or the nail will break if it get hung on something. They can grow into their pad and cause a painful infection if it gets too long. Her nails seem very thick so it is best to have them trimmed and possible filed to thin then more
