Is my 9-month-old dog's long heat cycle normal? Could she be pregnant?

Thank you for submitting your question! Most puppies will start their first heat cycle anywhere from about 6-10 months of age. It can last upwards of 18-21 days. You will notice swelling of her vulva and mammary chain. She will spot and bleed as well. Some dogs keep themselves very clean and you only see small amounts of discharge, others will require diapers. You may observe some behavioral changes as well. These can include a decreased appetite, attraction to male dogs or being more clingy to you. Most dogs will cycle every 6-9 months with small dogs cycling more frequently and giant breeds less. They normally stay joined for several minutes. Once the swelling from the male decrease they will part. There is s likely chance she may be pregnant from this but never a guarantee. The best recommendations are to breed a female after 18 months of age to allow full maturity. if she is younger than a year then she may need a c section to help with delivery. When she comes out of heat in 2 weeks then you can schedule to have her spayed before anything develops

It could be that Lanzo is still in heat, as it would be too early for signs of pregnancy if she just had her first heat. Vulva and nipple swelling are also signs of heat, and it does take time for them to go down after a dog ends her heat. I would have her seen by a vet in three weeks for a blood test called relaxin. This is a hormone produced when a dog is pregnant. While it isn't advisable for a dog to get pregnant on her first heat, it does happen and as long as you work with your vet during her pregnancy, she can be ok.

Dogs go through a heat cycle only twice a year or so, so the chances that Rain got pregnant from one incident at the dog park are rather slim. Mating in dogs takes about 20 minutes, and typically involves a "tie" which includes the dogs standing with their rear ends together. If Rain were to be pregnant, 9 months is not too young and she can very well have an absolutely normal pregnancy. I hope this helps and am happy to answer any other questions you may have!

Estrus in dogs causes swelling of the vulva and vaginal discharge which may be straw to pink/red in color. A cycle in dogs can last for about 3-4 weeks. If she had her last litter in June, then it is possible she came into heat (estrus) this fall and if she was mated with a male during her estrus, then it is possible she may be pregnant. Pregnancy lasts for about 60 days in dogs. If you suspect Daisy may be pregnancy, I would recommend taking Daisy to her veterinarian for an exam and an abdominal ultrasound to confirm presence of pups. False pregnancy are not very common but can happen approximately 1-3 months after an intact female's lat heat. Symptoms will mimic true pregnancy but should subside in a few weeks. Pregnancy in dogs do not vary much, except for the number of pups and the length of the pregnancy to some extent. Typically 60 days is the gestation period, but may be a few days less or a few days more. I hope this helps and thank you again for posting!

A dog's heat cycle lasts for around three weeks, so if she started on February 26, it should be ending soon. It's normal that she is spotting occasionally, and you know when she's out of heat when the discharge stops. Now if the bleeding continues for longer than three weeks or Sophie develops other signs such as anorexia, thick pus filled discharge, vomiting, increased bleeding, and/or lethargy, this is not normal and she will need to see a vet immediately.
