Can I give my pet liver support like silymarin with antifungals?

You can try finding this in milk thistle, silymarin, or Vitamin E. Though none of them will actually heal the liver. They, and Denamarin, are antioxidants that can help protect the liver from further damage, but they cannot reverse damage that has already occurred.

I would worry that at some point the antifungals would not keep the disease under control, or that the antifungals might cause toxicity to the liver and kidneys. This might be a better question for the vet who is managing the aspergillosis however.

Typically medications with the proper dose ad for a short period of time will not hurt the liver or kidneys. However any patient can be sensitive to medications. As long as Milo is eating, drinking and acting like her normal self I would not be concerned. IF she starts acting sick I would call the vet to discuss her medications and proper steps. In theory this would help a pet that is being exposed to a potential liver damaging drug. It definitely won't hurt. It can be expensive however. This is not the same but is fine for your dog. The licorice root is a natural anti inflammatory herbal remedy and it also inhibits liver injury so it's a good choice for animals with high liver enzymes. You may still want to give the milk thistle if you can find it separately. You have done an excellent job maintaining Kandy throughout her life with a liver shunt. While in theory anti-inflammatory medications can help to reduce the blood vessels feeding the tumor, this is only when combined with a chemotherapeutic agent such as cyclophosphamide given in a metronomic fashion. However, we have not found this to result in a better outcome in patients with metastasis (spread of the tumor). While those herbs are unlikely to be harmful, they unlikely to help. You can always however try the herbs and focus on her quality of life at this time. I would encourage you to seek a consultation with a veterinary oncologist that can review the case in detail and make recommendations. Good luck!

Milk thistle appears to be a safe and well-tolerated herb for animals. Side effects are usually mild and often involve the gastrointestinal tract, such as loose stools or mild digestive upsets. It is not recommended to be given to pregnant animals. I would not personally be worried about side effects at all when using this. Hope that answers your questions.
