What are the signs of liver problems in dogs and how do vets test?

How can we know that dog ha liver ailment or problem like inflamed liver and etc what are the different test available to check liver condition and what are the signs and symptoms of any liver disease to dog

A dog with liver disease may show very little signs but often they can be due and go off food. Sometimes they are sick and lose weight. In later stages the dogs gums and eyes can look yellow. Vets can run bloods to check liver function and perform ultrasound scans to look at the size and shape of the liver.

Liver disease can be tested through routine chemistry panels, an ultrasound of his abdomen, or specialized tests such as bile acids. Signs of liver disease include vomiting, diarrhea, yellowing of the eyes/skin, distended belly and/or decreased appetite.

A physical exam should be completed first by your veterinarian. Afterward, a blood sample for chemistries can be submitted. Liver values most commonly measured are ALP (alkaline phosphatase), ALT (alanine transaminase), AST (aspartate transaminase), bilirubin and albumin. A bile acids test can also be done to assess liver function. Abdominal xrays or ultrasound can be used to assess liver size and architecture.

Hi Fonda. I'm sorry Bowser isn't doing well. Liver disease can show a variety of symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, seizures, jaundice, blood clotting problems, and fluid in the abdomen. Hopefully the medication and food helps, but if you see any of those signs, have him seen by a vet immediately.

My dog's liver is failing. What tests can help diagnose the cause?

I'm very sorry to hear this. Unfortunately, liver disease is very complex. We notice elevation of the liver enzymes on the blood testing but that does not tell us why the liver is sick - only that it is sick. Multiple tests need to be done and even then, sometimes we can't figure it out. This happens in human medicine too. There are just some cases that are difficult. A liver ultrasound to look at the liver and gall bladder along with a biopsy should be done to look at the liver tissue. My dog has liver disease symptoms. Is an ultrasound worth it?

I think it's worth having an ultrasound to check Russ's liver. Depending on the results of that, it may be treatable, but of course I can't say for certain without seeing him in person. He's only a middle aged dog, and if there is a chance you can treat him, I would follow up on the diagnostics to see for sure. I'm sorry he's so sick!

My dog has high liver enzymes and an enlarged liver. Should I worry?

Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Elevated liver enzymes and abnormal liver appearance on ultrasound scan does not necessary mean liver tumour or liver failure. Older dogs often have abnormal liver appearance, which is not related to any serious underlying problem. Liver enzymes level is a measure of 'damage' to liver cells but it is not directly related to prognosis. Again, older dogs often have mild elevation of liver enzymes I would think that the specialist will perform full abdominal scan and possibly take liver samples through a needle - this is commonly performed procedure in dogs with signs of liver disease. Based on the findings of the aspirate, the doctor will recommend further testing or prescribe treatment for Mars.

This is a very valid question and it is important to consider his overall wellbeing and comfort above and beyond prolonging the length of his life. If he is mobile, greeting family members as he normally would and eating enough (a specialised liver diet and supplements can help to reduce some of the symptoms of poor liver function by reducing the amount of toxins the liver needs to excrete. As long as his appetite is sufficient to prevent significant weight loss then it is likely he is feeling ok in himself. What tests can tell me about my pet's liver health or disease?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! The liver function tests commonly available in a routine chemistry panel are glucose, albumin, cholesterol and BUN. A more specific, though separate test of liver function is bile acids which is the gold standard as far as liver function goes. Good luck!
