My dog has liver disease. Can I give omega-3 fish oil and supplements?

You can certainly give a fish oil/omega 3 supplement. Just be sure you use on made for dogs so that the oils are in the correct ratios. Dogs and humans have different needs. Hope this helps. Best wishes.

Essential Fatty Acids are always a good idea in my opinion since they are part of every living cell of the body and they are anti inflammatory. I don't know of any diseases where fish oil is not recommended. One thing you want to be careful of is the quality of the oil and whether contaminants (mercury, etc) are present. Supplements are not regulated (in the United States) so the quality varies significantly. I would choose my source of fish oil carefully and follow the directions based on body weight. No , Omega 3 fatty acids in the amount present in vitamin supplements should not adversely affect your dog. However I strongly advise that you consult with your veterinarian about giving him this supplement as your vet knows your dog and his medical history and would be more qualified that us to decide whether a multivitamin supplement is detrimental to your dog or even necessary.

Good morning Ms Yeung! I would not give this supplement to Mochu if it contains D3. Too much vitamin D can be toxic to dogs, as it causes hypercalcemia (increased blood calcium) which can lead to kidney failure, haemorrhage, and tissue mineralization in the heart, liver and kidneys. She will be getting all the vitamin D she needs from her food, and too much will not be good for her. It's fine to give her Omega 3 supplements, but make sure they don't contain extra vitamin D. With the omega fatty acids, she can have 1,000 mg fish oil containing 300 mg of EPA/DHA combined for every 30 pounds of body weight. I hope this helps :-)

Yes, you can use supplements on a dog with DCM. However, most of the supplements have similar actions to the drugs that we use for heart disease, so you need to be sure that you are working with your vet or a vet trained in herbal medicine to make sure the dosage and effects are safe for Chico. I use Hawthorne berry to increase cardiac contraction, and I don't see that Chico is on a medication for that, so that might be a good addition. And I don't think there are any contraindications for Omega 3 fish oil which can improve blood supply to the heart muscle itself. Again, I would recommend speaking to your vet about those supplements and see if they have any other suggestions. I will often use Coenzyme Q10 in my heart patients as well. Since this is considered "off label use", as this is not a product designed specifically for dogs, your veterinarian would be the one to direct your specific dog in terms of using this product since its "off-label." To adhere to my veterinary license, I cannot advise off-label doses for a patient I have not examined and a client that I have not met. However, I will tell you that I would tell my clients that this is generally a safe product to give a 50 pound lab once a day. You may notice some increased gas/flatulence, and a "fishy" odor to his breath. If you notice any vomiting, diarrhea or decreased appetite, get him in to see your vet and discontinue use.
