My dog got liquid medicine forcefully. Are aspiration signs immediate?

They are usually good at keeping things out of their airway, so it's rather difficult to make a dogs aspirate even if you give too much at one time. If she aspirated some, then it would definitely be obvious and she would be coughing right away. If you did not see that, then there is no need to worry about any problems developing later on. Hello. Yes, aspiration pneumonia would show up immediately with coughing, gagging & a very high respiratory rate. I only mentioned this to you yesterday because of the danger of inducing vomiting in a potentially choking dog. You said that Precious was fine, so I was not worried. Thank you for more information about Moon. If he has been coughing and you are concerned that the medication has gone down his lungs, yes, I would take him into a vet. It could cause aspiration pneumonia if it did go down his lungs. If Moon is eating, drinking, and is otherwise normal, you can wait until the morning to have him seen by a vet. If he isn't eating or drinking, and/or is very lethargic, have him seen by an ER vet now. Best of luck.

Cats can be very dramatic with liquid medication and some may have gotten up her nose. Aspirating in to the lungs would be more serious. As long as she only sounds congested in her throat/nose area she should be ok. Watch for loss of appetite, lethargy or yellow-green discharge from the nose. If any of those symptoms occur she should see your Vet. Have a great day!

It is possible she may have aspirated a small amount into her lungs. Monitor for continued coughing, sneezing, nasal discharge or lethargy. If enough was aspirated, the potential for pneumonia exists. A small syringe should be used instead of a spoon. You can slowly squirt the syrup in the side of her mouth and allow time for swallowing to prevent aspiration.

She needs to see a vet for treatment. Treatment for aspiration which can turn into aspiration pneumonia is oxygen therapy, intravenous (IV) catheter access, IV fluids, and IV antibiotics. Please take her into a vet now. Best of luck.

I would take Jebediah into a vet now. If he aspirated cough syrup, this could potentially lead to aspiration pneumonia. It is concerning his breathing sounds wet, and that is something that needs to be checked out by a vet. Best of luck.
