My dog is limping and swollen after an injury. Is his leg broken?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | neutered | 1 year and 1 month old | 5 lbs

Hurley (Yorkie/Jack Russell) jumped out of a moving car today, after going on a hike, around 11am. He favored one leg at first (with obvious road rash) but 20 min. later when we got home, would walk and play on it and has most of the day. Now after waking up from a nap is favoring it again but will still walk on it. It is more swollen then the good leg that I also sent a pic of. Could it be broken or something even though he resummed normal behavior most of the day?

Terriers are tough cookies and can handle a lot of pain before showing it. Since he is putting weight on the leg he likely did not break anything. He may just be sore or may have pulled a muscle or damaged a ligament. I would make him rest and just leash walk him for 2-3 days, no jumping and running, and if the limp is still there on Tuesday, have the leg looked at by a veterinarian.
