My dog's leg is red, painful, and limping after playing. Sprain?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Hello - my mini dashaund hurt his leg/hip playing. He’s not limping drastically but it seems obvious that it hurts a bit. In the att’d photo you can see significant redness. Wondering if that’s typical of what I think is a sprain? Thanks.

It doesn't look like a sprain injury. The redness /bruising to the skin is likely to be a result of blunt trauma (from a fall or unfortunate jump ?) which is causing some degree of abdominal and muscular pain. Please, apply a cold compress on the area for about 20-30 minutes and then re-assess the situation. If your dog is still limping badly and looks in pain, you should take him to your local vet for full clinical examination and to get treatment for him.
