My dog is limping. Does Petco offer X-rays and what's the cost?

Carson is adorable! Thanks for including a picture. The answer as to whether or not x-rays are recommended really depend on your veterinarian's examination. If they find something concerning on exam, then they may recommend taking x-rays. But I would definitely start with having them examine Carson to see what they can find on examination. As far as pain medications, there are a number of good pain medications, but they are all prescription. I am attaching a handout below with more information on pain medications for dogs. (It is discussing arthritis pain, but is a good source of information for pain medications in dogs). I would recommend taking Jax to a veterinarian. The veterinarian will perform a physical examination and then they may take an xray depending on what they feel and see. If they do not find anything they can provide Jax with a good anti-inflammatory to help with the pain. I personally believe it is always necessary to do an x-ray. Unfortunately, they are expensive but they are the best way to determine what is causing the pain in his leg. X-rays can help to rule out fractures, dysplasia, or soft tissue injury. A cruciate ligament injury is also a possibility, so your veterinarian may want to perform an orthopedic test to see if there is any laxity in the knee. There is no guarantee the problem will heal with rest and prolonging an accurate diagnosis may just make the problem worse.

Based off the radiograph, it looks like her fibula, the smaller bone in her lower leg, may be fractured. It is difficult to know for sure without an orthogonal view, but that may be the reason for her limping. I recommend restricting her activity to cage rest and leash walks only, do not let her run or play for at least 4 weeks to allow time for the bone to heal. I recommend having her evaluated by a veterinarian who can perform bloodwork and see if it is safe to prescribe her anti-inflammatory pain medications to help her feel more comfortable. NEVER give human pain medications to dogs as they can be markedly toxic. I hope this is helpful!

How old is he? If he is past 1 year old, I would be concerned that he may have a fracture of the tibial crest. That is the large bone below the knee. The hips also don't look 100% normal. Without doing an exam on him myself and knowing exactly where he is painful, it is difficult for me to just look at the radiographs and give you a diagnosis. Also, every veterinary surgeon charges differently for different procedures and it is also very depending on location and cost of living. My advice to you would be to go in for the consultation with the surgeon so they can give you more details on what is wrong with him and the best course of treatment. Be sure to ask for estimates for the procedure and if you cannot afford what they are recommending, simply ask what the next best, more affordable option would be. Cats are quite resilient and sometimes they can heal with strict confinement, but I would see what the surgeon thinks. I hope this helps and he starts to feel better soon.
