Why is my dog limping, in pain, struggling with stairs and jumping?

There are a number of possibilities including developmental joint disease, infectious arthritis such as lymes disease and nutritional imbalance. I strongly recommend a full physical exam and possibly xrays by your vet as soon as possible, they can also prescribe pain relief as appropriate

Poor Bailee! Limping can be caused by a fracture, arthritis, sprain, infections, or even certain types of cancer. I recommend keeping Bailee calm until you can get her in to see a vet. Your vet can take x-rays to determine exactly what is going on. I hope all is well!

Hi there! Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This can happen from many reasons that go all the way from a muscle sprain to even cancer. I recommend that you have TJ evaluated by your veterinarian for further tests and assessment. Your veterinarian would be able to localize the pain and proceed with radiographs for example to look for any possible changes that could help rule out or in some of these conditions. Treatment would be based on findings but at the very least, your veterinarian could start TJ on medications for pain to make him feel better. Good luck! Hoping for a speedy recovery!

Hi. Thank you for writing in with a question. This off and on limping could be caused by several things ranging from a soft tissue injury to infection or repeated injuries. I don't know if you were in valley fever heavy areas, but if you are that is a possibility for an off-and-on lameness as well. I would recommend continuing rest and anti-inflammatories prescribed by your veterinarian until you can see the orthopedic specialist. The orthopedic specialist is the best Next Step. Certain conditions such as Lyme disease and autoimmune conditions can cause occasional limping, as you described. Your vet can perform x-rays and blood work to rule out the conditions above. This can be due to conditions such as a soft tissue injury, ligament conditions, a fracture and even a tumor. For this reason, I recommend that you have Jo evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. A veterinarian should be able to perform an examination and localize where the pain is so that further diagnostics like radiographs can be performed. Treatment will be highly dependent on what is causing the lameness. At the very least your veterinarian can start Jo on pain control medications to provide comfort. Causes of a front leg lameness could be: arthritis, a strain or sprain that needs more time, Lyme disease, neck injury and pinched nerve, peripheral nerve sheath tumor, bone tumor, bursitis/tendinitis. I think having Mya examined is a good idea since it’s been waxing and waning for a few months. Your Vet may want to check her for Lyme or take X-rays. She may just need a few weeks of a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory and rest. I hope this helps and I wish Mya a speedy recovery!
