My golden is limping, licking his elbow, and falling. What's wrong?

This presentation could be due to a trauma or localized spot of skin infection (likely to be caused by bacteria or fungal). A check up, appropriate disinfection and possibly antibiotics or antifungal meds (oral, topical or in a shampoo formulation) are needed to solve the problem. Disinfection can eventually be started at home with very diluted hibiscrub or betadine or salted water baths. Buster collar may be useful as well to avoid any licking (if any). Generally that little piece of bone will eventually scar down to the joint capsule and will not cause much of a problem. If it becomes a chronic source of lameness, it can likely be arthroscopically removed. The thought is that maybe there was some arthritis forming and a small piece broke off. It could also be the result of trauma or a developmental condition causing a flap of unhealthy bone to form of the femoral head that eventually broke off. Bone cancer is unfortunately common in Golden Retrievers, so I definitely recommend trying to get a diagnosis ASAP for the best chance of a positive outcome. Referral to a specialist for additional imaging studies could also be considered, if you would rather exhaust all non-invasive options first. If the biopsy does not show evidence of cancer, it may still provide some insight into what is causing her lameness issues so that she can be effectively treated.

Lameness which is worse after rest is common in many cases of arthritis. I would recommend a full vet check and possibly xrays to determine the exact nature of the pain and formulate ongoing treatment to reduce pain and maximise mobility

This can be helped with medication and some physical therapy. In order to get the best treatment you would have to take Jack to a veterinarian. The veterinarian will ensure that Jack doesn't have any other injuries or conditions causing him to limp. Considering he seems to have a significant decrease in activity, it's best to take him to the vet within the next day or two. Decreased activity can also indicate other, more serious problems like heart disease or anemia, so it's best to get him evaluated by a vet as soon as possible to ensure it's nothing serious. Since the skin is broken and/or inflamed, Bruno should be physically examined by your veterinarian. He may need antibiotics, anti-inflammatories or both. If there is a lump or mass associated with the sore, it should be aspirated to collect samples for pathology. Use an e-collar (cone) to prevent Bruno from licking it.

Hi, yes this is typically a result from lying down/resting on hard surfaces. It is quite raw at present but over the course of time will heal and become a harder surface, might get pigmented too. You could take Charlie to see your vet to get an ointment to aid healing and pad his bedding and resting areas. We use foam mattresses in the hospital for dogs that are recumbent, and they are fairly easy to find, or you could use an extra large duvet filled over. Even if Charli is not recumbent, the soft mattress and bedding will help her too. Hope this helps !
