Why is my dog limping, and his front paw floppy and painful?

Possible causes of Bruno's limp are: strain or a sprain from being stepped on, if he is older it could have aggravated arthritis, a toe or a bone could be broken, or it could be something unrelated like Lyme disease. Since Bruno can hardly walk on the leg that indicates pain. I recommend having Bruno seen by your Vet for an exam. If there is concern for the paw then they may want to take X-rays, otherwise they may just prescribe anti-inflammatories and rest. I hope this helps and I wish Bruno a speedy recovery!

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Rocco! Yes it could just be sore soft tissue. I’d rest him for 1-2 days and see if there is improvement. But if there is no improvement he should see your Vet. He is young and if there is a fracture we want to know that sooner than later. He could have a fractured toe, a fractured bone in his wrist or a fracture a long the growth plate. I wish Rocco a speedy recovery!

I would be looking into the possibility of this being something affecting the joints per se such as immune mediated polyarthritis or perhaps something like hypertrophic osteodystrophy given his young age. These are possible things your veterinarian can look into. Treatment of course would depend on findings. At the very least they can try pain control medications and anti-inflammatory drugs. Since it seems to have gone on longer than this, I would recommend that he sees his veterinarian. He will likely need some x-rays of the affected bone or joint and some prescription pain medication. In the meantime, keep him quiet (no running, jumping, playing). He should avoid stairs as much as possible and go out on a leash to go potty. Do not give him any over-the-counter medications. Since the lameness seems to be reoccurring, I would recommend you bring her into a veterinarian for an examination. Young dogs can often experience many conditions that can cause lameness. These can range from conditions such as panosteitis (growing pains) to congenital conditions such as elbow dysplasia, or OCD lesion of either the shoulder or elbow. Certainly a soft tissue injury (muscle strain or sprain) may also be the culprit. Regardless, it may be nice to see if the veterinarian can determine her "pain point" and localize where her lameness is coming from. They will also be able to give you prescription medications that ma help to ease her discomfort. I hope this information helps, good luck and I hope Luna gets some relief soon! :-)

I am sorry Baby Bear hurt himself. It depends on what is causing him to limp. I would recommend a veterinarian to pin point where the pain is and see exactly what he did. It could be anything from stopping on something with his paw, a sprain or even a ligament tear. The veterinarian can give medication to Baby Bear that will help with inflammation and pain. Depending on where the pain is located too they may recommend radiographs. Until you can get him to a veterinarian I recommend resting him so he does not injury himself further.
