My dog is limping on both front legs. What are the causes and solutions?

I am very sorry to hear that Amica is limping, I am sure it is worrying for you both. Unfortunately, there are many reasons why a dog may limp, ranging from injury, infection, osteoarthritis, disorders of the growing bones or joints, and even some cancers. Dogs can also be very good at hiding the exact location of the problem. In order to determine the precise cause of Amica's limping it would be best to take her in for an examination by a veterinarian. A veterinarian will also be able to make Amica comfortable by providing pain relief medication. The vet may also perform an orthopaedic exam and an X-ray. If Amica seems very uncomfortable or depressed, you suspect a broken bone, the limb is dangling at an unnatural angle, a limb is being dragged, severe swelling is occurring, the limb is hot, bone is piercing the skin, or nonstop bleeding is occurring, Amica needs to see a veterinarian immediately. If none of the above are occurring, and due to the high frequency of trauma cases which heal on their own, in limping dogs, as well as Amica's young age, you can try conservative management at home for 24 hours to see if Amica improves. Try the following at home; Keep Amica as comfortable as possible Strict rest with as little movement as can be managed When moving handle with care Do not give Amica any medications without a veterinarian’s approval Apply a cold compress for first 24 hours Switch to a warm compress after 24 hours If pain or limping continues after 24 hours then take Amica to see a veterinarian. Since Kilba can't talk, only a physical exam will be able to determine the source of the lameness. Just like people, the pain/limping can be related to many causes including a ligament tears, soft tissue injury, a developmental abnormality or even a spinal issue. You may try strict rest for a few days (no walks, running, jumping or stairs). If Kilba does not improve, have her examined by the veterinarian. She may need radiographs and the doctor will determine this based on the exam. I hope she starts feeling better quickly.

There can be multiple causes for limping, including Lyme disease, a muscle strain, or an orthopedic injury. If they are both limping, it could be that they both were exposed to the same thing, or injured themselves or each other while playing. If they are both feeling so poorly, I would recommend they be evaluated by their regular veterinarian to try to determine the underlying cause of their discomfort, have any necessary testing done (X-rays, tick screen) and start any treatment that they may need. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Kaja! Limping is a sign of pain. Even if you can not locate the exact spot she likely hurts some where. Causes of a front leg lameness are: strain or sprain of the muscle, lyme disease, elbow dysplasia. OCD (cartilage abnormality in the shoulder most commonly), panosteitis, hypertrophic osterodystrophy, neck pain, a foreign body penetration in the pain, torn nail, or even a skin infection of the foot. I recommend since Kaja hasn't improved in 2 days that you see the Vet. Even if it is just a pulled muscle Kaja can be started on pain medication to help her feel better. I recommend strict rest, that means no running, jumping, stairs, playing with other dogs and leash walks only. I hope this helps and I wish Kaja a speedy recovery!

She may be licking at the paw because it hurts, or there is something inside of it such as a migrating grass seed. Signs of infection in a paw would include redness, swelling, and discharge. Dogs can limp for a variety of reasons including a soft tissue injury such as a sprain, infection, a fractured bone or damage to a ligament or tendon. In cases of a mild sprain or strain, reducing Monah's activity level for a few days should help her to heal. If the lameness is not improving, you notice any swelling or Monah seems lethargic you should have her seen by a veterinarian. They may recommend an xray to better determine what is causing the lameness.

Poor Gemma! It sounds like she is uncomfortable on her front legs. She could be dealing with any number of issues-I would recommend a visit to your regular veterinarian for a checkup. They can do a thorough physical exam to look for any problems, and may recommend X-rays to check for things like fractures, panosteitis or HOD.
