Why is my dog limping and avoiding weight on his front paw?

I recommend that you have him evaluated by your veterinarian so that this can be further assessed which will likely include radiographs. Just like people, the pain/limping can be related to many causes including a ligament tears, soft tissue injury, a developmental abnormality or even a spinal issue. You may try strict rest for a few days (no walks, running, jumping or stairs). If Sami does not improve or if he gets worse, have him examined by the veterinarian. Pets who exhibit toe touching lameness on the hing legs are a concern for a tear of the cranial cruciate ligament which is serious. He may need radiographs and the doctor will determine this based on the exam. I hope he starts feeling better quickly.

I recommend resting him for the next 48 hours. No running, jumping, or playing. Take him out to toilet on a leash, and bring him right back in when he's done. If he still appears painful after this time, then I would take him into the vet for an exam. The vet can diagnose where the pain is coming from, and can dictate a treatment plan for it. He may also benefit from some pain medications, which the vet can prescribe. Please do not give him any human pain medications, as many are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given. The toe could be broken or dislocated, or it might be a soft tissue injury. The fact that he is limping means that he does have some level of pain even if he's not crying. I would recommend having your vet examine the toe - they might feel confident that it is a soft tissue injury once they are able to feel the toe and the joint or they might recommend an x-ray. They can also prescribe safe pain medication for him.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Charlie. I am sorry to hear that he has been limping. He will need to see his veterinarian. He could have damaged a ligament in one of his knees, he may have developed arthritis or he could be experiencing a soft tissue injury such as a muscular strain. The examination will hopefully tell his veterinarian where he is painful and it can be decided of x-rays are needed. In the meantime, I would give him strict rest. No walks, avoid stairs as much as possible and do not allow him to run or play. This will allow his body some rest.
