Why is my dog constantly licking his rear end and now it's bleeding?

Hello, thank you for using PetCoach. I am sorry to hear that Switzerland is having this issue. Please understand it is very difficult to give advice without examining him or at least seeing a photo. Based solely on your description it sounds like he had an impacted anal gland that ruptured. I do think it is best to take him to a vet for an exam. The first thing you need to do though is to get him a cone collar to wear so he stops chewing at the area. If the area is still bothering him the other anal gland (they have two) may be impacted/infected as well, hence, an exam is important. There is nothing you can do to sop the bleeding at home but you can put antibiotic gel/cream on it until you can get him to the vet. Again, without the cone collar though, he will likely lick off anything you apply topically. Red’s anus does look irritated and I can see some redness on the underside of his tail as well. He might be licking due to irritation from full anal glands, parasites or allergies. I would recommend having your vet examine him and check his anal glands. They may want to check a stool sample as well. Oral or topical medications might help. I would recommend putting an e-collar on to prevent licking until you can get to the vet.

If he is a little dog- do you have a disposable plastic bowl that you could cut the back out of to make a makeshift E-collar ? If he's large a plastic trash can can work. It should be long enough that his nose doesn't push past or it won't prevent him from licking. Also warm compressignthe area may make him more comfortable until you can be seen for antibiotics and pain management. Poor Akeilles, I hope he improves soon!

Your dog may have infected or impacted anal glands. This certainly would explain the discomfort and foul smell. I recommend getting him seen by your vet as soon as possible to have them checked to make sure that is indeed what is going on, expressed and maybe put on antibiotics to help him heal faster.

It looks like it could be a growth or maybe from an injury. It's obviously bothering Panda if he's licking at it. Put an Ecollar on him to stop the licking. You can make one at home or buy one at a pet store. I'd make him an appointment with the vet to have this diagnosed and treated.

It is possible that Zoey may be developing an anal sac abscess. It is also possible that she just has perianal itchiness from allergies. However, based on the picture it appears to me more right sided than left, so I would be very suspicious about an anal sac abscess. I would highly encourage you to have her evaluated by your veterinarian as soon as possible. In the meantime consider using a warm water compress to the area to improve comfort.
