Why is my dog licking his private area and has a smelly wound?

This looks like an infected wound. It's possible Compton did this himself, meaning no trauma like a bite wound. It is unlikely to be related to his reproductive abnormality, I cannot tell what caused him to start licking this area but allergies would be a concern. Because of how deep and raw it looks I recommend having your veterinarian do an exam and Compton will likely need antibiotics and maybe steroids to help this clear. In the meantime keep his area clean and dry and have Compton wear an ecollar to prevent him from any further licking.

If Snowy has a visible wound that appears infected it is best to seek veterinary care asap. Open infected wounds will need cleaning from your vet and antibiotics to help it heal. You will also need to stop Snowy from licking or chewing at the area as that will only make the infection worse by introducing more bacteria into the wound. After treatment, using an Elizabethan (cone) collar or old t-shirt to keep him from licking and scratching at the wound is best to help it heal. Your vet may also recommend medicated shampoos, flea medications, daily allergy meds, or other treatments for long-term relief of the initial cause of the itching.

Hello. Alvin looks like he is chronically licking his skin. Since this is an isolated area, you need to investigate what the underlying cause might be. This might include some pain from arthritis or inflammation in the muscle, to basically an obsessive compulsive type behavior. The first thing is to put an Elizabethan collar on him so he can not continue to lick here. Then see your vet so any underlying causes can be addressed. Hopefully, this will clear up quickly. Ouch! Poor Dylan! This looks like a little local infection that he has been licking. I would place an e-collar I him to prevent licking. You can clean it with mild soap and water. And I would also put some neosporin on it twice a day. If it is not improving in the next day or two then I would definitely take him in to see your veterinarian for an exam. Your vet will be able to prescribe some oral anabiotics and some stronger topical medicine if needed. If at any point he is not eating or is lethargic then I would also take him to your vet. Unfortunately there is not picture attached to your post, so I'm not sure what this area looks like. It could be he has a rash, skin infection, or fungal infection, and he's making it worse by licking the area. Dogs lick an area when it's really bothering them. I would take him into a vet first thing in the morning. The vet can diagnose what is causing this issue, and can treat him. Best of luck.
