My dog won't stop licking paws. Is it a problem? What can I do?

Most pet wipes are safe to use as are plain, unscented baby wipes. You can also use diluted chlorhexidine as a foot soak. Dry the feet thoroughly afterwards. Licking of the feet can be a symptom of allergies, so if it persists or worsens have Dahlia examined by your veterinarian. Discuss allergy testing, hydrolyzed diets, food elimination trials and antihistamine use during the visit.

If it is allergies, she will need to get on some allergy medication. If it is related to arthritis pain, then obviously she will need pain medication to stop the licking. If it is anxiety related, then anxiety medication is needed. The vomiting is concerning and may or may not be related to the licking. Long story short, I’d recommend taking Dahlia in to vet to help determine the underlying cause and get started on the right treatment. In the mean time, you can apply a 1% hydrocortisone cream as long as you also have Dahlia wear an E-collar at all times. Best wishes to you and Dahlia.

A visit at your local vets is recommended to make the definite diagnosis and to start treatment for Koda. In the meantime, try and stop Koda from licking the paws as he will likely make the skin more inflamed. Using a head collar or bandage the paws (and change the bandage daily) may be necessary.

It is possible Bailey is having an allergy or soft tissue trauma to the foot. I would recommend an e-collar (cone) to prevent licking. You can do Epson salt soaks 2 times a day and give over the counter anti histamine. However if it is not improving I would recommend taking her to a vet for a closer look. Hope she feels better!

No matter what you use to treat him with, this will not resolve as long as he continues licking. You will need to get him an Elizabethan (cone) collar until the feet are healed. I suggest you try these medicated wipes. If no improvement after treating for 10 days or so then he needs to go back to the vet for some testing. Poor pup! If Princess is licking her paws to the point that they are bleeding, this is definitely not normal. The most common cause of excessive licking or chewing of the paws is an allergy problem - either seasonal environmental allergies or food allergies can cause this. Other possibilities would include a bacterial or fungal skin infection in this area, or even skin mites (mange). I would recommend having Princess examined by a vet as soon as you are able to - he/she can do some simple skin tests if needed to help diagnose the problem and get her started on appropriate medication to treat it. In the meantime, I would recommend getting an e-collar (plastic cone) for her to wear to prevent her from continuing to lick her paws and make things worse.

If there are no open wounds soak her feet in a epsom salt soak for a few minutes and rinse well. If there is any open wounds, peeling of paw pads or oozing then she need to see a vet. There are booties you can buy to protect her feet if she is out playing on rough ground. Do not walk her on pavement if it is hot to the touch. Some dogs may lick their feed due to allergies or contact irritation. Keep her feet clean and dry. Wiping her feet with a damp cloth after walking can help remove surface irritants.
