Why is my dog constantly licking my other dog all of a sudden?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Hi. I have two dogs and one is the mother of the other one. My one dog is about 10 and the other 6. The 6 year old dog suddenly started constantly licking my other dog. Does it mean anything?

This could be a sign of affection, or that the older dog rolled in something gross and the younger dog likes the taste and wants to lick it off. The younger one could be grooming your older dog, or doing it as a sign of social status.
