My dog is licking a bald spot on her leg and it's growing. What is it?

I highly recommend taking Ming to a veterinarian to have this area of her evaluated. It is hard to tell from the picture but it looks like there is a wound or abrasion on her skin. Your veterinarian will be able to fully evaluate her and see if she needs antibiotics to help. They also can provide medication so she isn't so itchy. It looks like a lick granuloma which can be secondary to itching, pain, boredom, stress, OCD. They are commonly treated with antibiotics, anti-inflammatory medications, and bandages or E-collar to prevent licking. If that doesn't work then anti-anxiety medications, like Prozac, can be prescribed to see if that helps. This is most likely not mange. These are called papules. It looks like a mild skin infection is starting. Is she licking at it? If she is then I recommend putting an elizabethan collar on her so she cannot lick at it. I would recommend not letting Coco lick at it. By Coco licking at it she can actually make it worse. I would recommend a visit to the veterinarian if these lesions get worse or they do not resolve. Your veterinarian may give oral antibiotics or a medicated shampoo to help resolve this. If you notice her drinking or urinating more then I recommend a visit to the veterinarian now. Sometimes if female dogs have a urinary tract infection they can lick that area and it can create a skin infection also. This could be from an insect bite or injury that he’s licked excessively. I would place him in a cone and apply a thin film of antibacterial ointment on it daily. If it doesn’t improve in about ten days then you can take him in for a skin scraping to check for mange. I don’t often see localized demodex in a dog this age. Dolly has a lick granuloma. The staining you are seeing around it is from her saliva. Often times dogs lick a particular area due to underlying pain (ie: arthritis in the joint). Sometimes it can be that something irritated the skin which started the licking and the subsequent reaction. No way to tell just by looking at it. Usually steroids and antibiotics are needed to clear this up. Also, she will need to wear a cone to stop the licking. Depending on Marley's age, a tumor may be more likely. However, skin infections, particularly with fungi are also possible. A vet can take a small sample of skin to determine exactly what is going on, and prescribe antibiotics, medicated ointments/shampoos as needed. With how severe the area looks, it is unlikely to go away on its own. You can also get Marley an E-collar or "cone" to prevent her from licking/chewing the area and making it worse. Hello. Alvin looks like he is chronically licking his skin. Since this is an isolated area, you need to investigate what the underlying cause might be. This might include some pain from arthritis or inflammation in the muscle, to basically an obsessive compulsive type behavior. The first thing is to put an Elizabethan collar on him so he can not continue to lick here. Then see your vet so any underlying causes can be addressed. Hopefully, this will clear up quickly.
