My dog was bitten, licked gentian violet, now has excessive saliva. Rabies?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | unneutered | 32 lbs

My dog was harassed by another dog & was but on the foot. I out gentian violet on it but he licked all of it off & he had excessive saliva in his mouth. was that caused by the gentian or could he possibly have rabies? i doubt it has rabies because the other dog has been well & alive for a good time. thank you.

I'm sorry Rocky was bit by another dog! This gentian violet could be what has caused his excessive salivation. I doubt it is rabies as well, as symptoms of it won't show up this quickly. I would have Rocky seen by a vet for this bite. He will likely need antibiotics to prevent any infection from occurring due to the bacteria in the dog's mouth. It may be ideal as well to have his rabies vaccine up dated if he's due for a booster.

The gentian violet may have been bitter, and that may have caused Rocky to salivate. However, you cannot be sure that there was no chance of rabies transmission unless 1.) you are sure he has been vaccinated against rabies and that the vaccine is still active and 2.) you are sure that the dog that bit him does not have rabies. If you are sure of those 2 facts, then I think you can be pretty confident that Rocky doesn't have rabies, however I would monitor this bite very carefully, and if you see any redness or discharge take him into your vet for exam. Dog bites can very easily cause severe infection, and often need to be aggressively cleansed, and the dog needs systemic antibiotics, Gentian violet has very weak antibacterial properties, so I would discontinue using it.

I'm sorry Tramp bit you! No, there is no risk of rabies to you from the bite. Even though he licks the mouths of dogs who aren't vaccinated, rabies is only passed from dogs who currently have it and he will not have it given he is vaccinated. As for him going after other dogs, I see that he isn't neutered. Intact males can be aggressive toward other dogs, and when they can't reach the object of their aggression, they turn on the nearest human or animal. It's called redirected aggression and it's serious. I recommend neutering him and having him seen by a professional behavioral expert to deal with his aggression. It can and does get worse over time, and you don't want him to attack another person's pet or a child. Something like that will have serious consequences for him. Good luck, I hope this helps!

My vaccinated dog bit. Could he have rabies without a booster shot?

Yoour brother needs to be seen by a doctor now. The doctor will take caree of his wound and decide whether he needs rabies shots. Your dog needs a rabies booster now 1 year after getting the initial vaccination. The vomiting, not eating , lethargy and listlessness can be caused by a gastrointestinal infection or a parvovirus infection. Morty also needs to be seen by a veterinarian for this. Please take him to a veterinarian today if possible.

My dog died with bloody stool. Could it be rabies from licking?

First off, I am so very sorry that Lawiswis died today! If he had rabies, you would see significant behavioral changes such as aggression, and rabies is passed via bites not licking. If he had blood in his stool and wasn't eating, I would be very concerned he had parvovirus. It's a life threatening GI infection in unvaccinated dogs and puppies that is too often fatal and causes bloody stool and anorexia. That would be the most likely cause of his death, and you cannot get parvovirus. In the future, make sure any puppy you gets vaccines from the vet. Again, I am so very sorry for your loss :-(

My unvaccinated dog licked a wound. Is rabies a concern for the person?

There is no chance this person will get rabies from being licked. Rabies is only passed via a bite from an infected animal, and if your dog did have rabies, you would see signs such as foaming at the mouth, loss of appetite, weakness, seizures, sudden change in personality, and disorientation among others. There is no need to worry. There has been no cases of human rabies acquired in the UK since 1902. The last recorded case of human rabies was in 2012, but the patient acquired rabies in India after being bit by a dog. I would recommend having your dog vaccinated for rabies, distemper, parvo, canine hepatitis, and parainfluenza for her health.
