My vaccinated dog bit. Could he have rabies without a booster shot?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | unneutered | 1 year and 3 months old | 3.307 lbs

My brother was bitten just now by Morty. There are about 3 puncture wounds. Morty was vaccinated from rabies when he was 3 mos old, but no booster was given to him yet. Morty went where my bro was, seemingly asking for physical touch, so my brother gently patted his head. He was being careful because Morty is sick (vomiting, not eating, lethargic, listless). However, a second pat later, Morty suddenly lunged at his hand and bit a finger. Is it possible he still has rabies even after vaccination?

Yoour brother needs to be seen by a doctor now. The doctor will take caree of his wound and decide whether he needs rabies shots.
Your dog needs a rabies booster now 1 year after getting the initial vaccination. The vomiting, not eating , lethargy and listlessness can be caused by a gastrointestinal infection or a parvovirus infection. Morty also needs to be seen by a veterinarian for this. Please take him to a veterinarian today if possible.

Dogs are very sensitive to new environments and stress so so wouldn't be surprised if a lot of it is down to the changes occurring. Whilst he is eating and drinking normally I wouldn't worry too much. However if he deteriorates or dies not return to his usual self in a few days it would be best to get him examined.

Since he has had his rabies vaccination, you do not need to be worried. You do not need ARV. You do, however, need to be worried that you could get a skin infection. Just keep the wounds clean as it looks like you have done. If you notice any major redness, pain or swelling around the bite areas you need to see your human doctor.

If she vomited 6 times last night than you need to call your vet and give him/her an update. Your vet may want to see your dog again today for a recheck. She might need subcutaneous fluids again and/or an anti-vomiting medications. Hope our dog feels better soon!

Hi Margaux! I'm sorry that Chim Chim has been biting you. If he has been fully vaccinated against rabies, there is no worry to you about getting it from him. Now if he hasn't been fully vaccinated, i.e. he's had only one rabies vaccine and not the subsequent booster, I would give your human doctor a call. Your question about needing to be re-vaccinated is one related to human medicine, and since we are veterinarians and veterinary professionals, we cannot advise on human medical questions. Hello. If Bella received a proper vaccination from her veterinarian, then there is no need to worry at all about your sister getting rabies. If the vaccine was not properly administered by a licensed veterinarian, the Bella might be able to be quarantined as required by your local municipality. Here in the US, an unvaccinated dog is quarantined at a holding facility ( often a veterinary facility ) for 10 days. If no symptoms, then no need to worry. My dog has a bite wound with pus on its neck. Is rabies a concern?

Hi and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It sounds like the bite wound has become infected. Bite wounds typically require the attention of a veterinarian. If the wound is deep enough, it may require stitches and prescription antibiotics if it is infected. Depending on your local animal control and rabies laws, your puppy may need a rabies vaccine now and then a booster in 6 months. I would be sure to have Puppy seen by a veterinarian right away so he can have this wound evaluated.
