Why does my dog only lick his paw at night and whimper when touched?

Bacterial/yeast infections, allergies (inhaled, food), demodex mange mites, parasite problems, are among some of the more common causes. I would advise taking Joy to your vet. Your vet can gather a detailed history and perform an exam. Based on those findings, they can then advise you on a diagnostic/treatment plan. Possible tests include fecal tests/skin scrapes, skin cytology, bacterial culture/sensitivity, biopsy, allergy testing, etc. Treatment is based on what is learned from these tests. This could involve antibiotics, antifungal medicines, foot soaks, antihistamines, steroids, allergy medications, etc. She may require an Elizabethan collar to prevent her from licking the paw also. Licking at the paw can mean their is an irritation, injury or an allergy. If Archi will not let you closely inspect the paw, I recommend to have him examined by his veterinarian to look for an injury or evidence of infection. Otherwise you can wash the paw well and rinse it. An omega 3 fatty acid supplement for dogs can help improve skin health and decrease itchiness. Place an e-collar on Darby to prevent further kicking and chewing. An Epsom salt foot soak may provide relief from whatever is bothering her. Restrict activity to just leash walks for elimination. Monitor for worsening lameness/sensitivity, swelling, bruising or bleeding. See your veterinarian for an exam if symptoms persist.

This could potentially be allergies causing him to lick at his paws. The main causes of allergies are fleas, ingredients in the food or something in the environment. If he continues to do this, it would be ideal to have him evaluated by your veterinarian to start to work him up for allergies and to potentially start him on medications to decrease the itch and potentially treat a secondary infection if found on exam. Loki’s paw is clearly bothering him. It could be he injured the paw, have a foreign body, or a growth. I’d have this checked out by a vet on Monday. To stop him from licking until then, put an Ecollar on him. You can make one at home or buy one at a pet store.

It could also be due to an infection or injury to the paws. He should see a vet for this to get it diagnosed and treated. Tonight, try soaking his paws in an Epsom salt bath to see if that helps.
