My dog is not getting up, not eating, limping, and feels hot. Why?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Sometimes dogs feel warm and do not have a fever so I would not necessarily think that she has a fever because her tongue is warm. If you wanted to be sure, you can check her temperature rectally and if in between 99.5 and 102.5 then she would be ok. I do recommend though that you have her evaluated by your veterinarian for the foot issue. This can sometimes occur from trauma to the leg and it would be worth knowing if there is any evidence of a fracture or something of that nature. Your veterinarian could perform radiographs if deemed necessary on examination. Good luck and have a great day!

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Gidget! How old is Gidget? Have they tested her for Lyme disease or other tick born diseases? That should be done. Other possibilities are immune medicated joint disease or meningitis but Lyme disease is very high on my list. Good luck!

Causes of a fever are: Lyme disease, immune conditions, infection (urinary, joint, lung) or pending GI upset. If she isn't better by the morning she should be seen by your Vet. I wish you the best!

Hi, I'm Dr. Johnson. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I am sorry Jasmine is sick! The normal temperature for a dog rectally is 100-102. So I do not think Jasmine has a fever. Regardless it sounds like she isn't feeling well. There are many reasons why a dog suddenly won't eat. I see that Jasmine is an older dog and you mentioned she is having trouble walking. She may be in pain or be suffering from a neurologic problem. Other causes for not eating are liver/kidney problems or other metabolic issues; an upset stomach from a virus, a food sensitivity or pancreatitis; or even cancer. Due to her age and the fact that it has been 2 days I recommend you have her evaluated by your Veterinarian. Based on their exam they may want to do blood work and or X-rays. Poor Girl! Without seeing her, I cannot say whether or not it is serious, but I am definitely concerned. She could have gotten bit by something or broken a bone and be in a lot of pain, both of which could make her not want to eat. I would try to have her seen by your vet as soon as possible so they can determine what is wrong before she gets any worse. I worry if she got bit by something poisonous that it may be more difficult to treat later if she gets worse. Your vet will be able to do blood work and even x-rays if needed to help her feel better. Normal temperature of a dog is 102.5 so her temp is just mildly elevated and could be caused by the stress and excitement of going to the vet. You could take her temperature at home and see if it elevated. Inflammation can could cause a mild elevation but I would be concerned if it increases and/or stays elevated. If she doesn't improve on the Deramaxx and the limp continues then your vet will need to do additional testing to determine the cause. An x-ray and blood work would definitely be recommended if she doesn't improve. Hope she feels better soon!

Hi, I would say based on your description of Ginger's recent activity, decrease in appetite, and vomiting that yes, she is certainly telling you that she does not feel well at all. There are many reasons medically for this sudden change. The best recommendation I can make for Ginger is to take her to your veterinarian so he/she can perform a good physical exam and determine the cause of these recent problems.
