My dog has lepto. How to prevent human spread and keep my family safe?

The treatment with Doxycicline is in the second stage of the disease, so i assume he has been on amoxycilline for about 2 weeks before the Doxycicline was started. if this is the case he should be fine being around other dogs and people at the moment.

If Oreo is still sick from Leptospirosis, then I would not recommend bathing him. It is never recommended to bathe a sick dog unless medically necessary. The other concern with Leptospirosis is if Oreo is still shedding the organism in his urine, then it is possible that he can spread the disease to you, so you need to be very careful handling him and may need to use gloves and a mask to bathe him if he has urine on himself. When Oreo seems to be feeling back to normal, I would recommend asking your vet about when to bathe him and what precautions to take. Leptospirosis is frequently spread via the urine of infected rodents and other mammals. If your dog spends time outdoors or "in the field", the lepto vaccine should be considered. There are many strains, or serovars, of leptospirosis that can infect dogs. It is important to confirm with your veterinarian that the vaccine protects against the 4 most common serovars as opposed to a vaccine that has only 2. An initial vaccine is administered and followed up with a booster 3-4 weeks later, then yearly afterwards.

Dogs do not always die from lepto but there will be those dogs that are quite sick and cannot make it. I would take her back into the vet immediately to get intensive care with them there including IV fluids and injectable medications to try to save her. I hope this helps.

DHPP does not contain leptospirosis, so that is the difference. Leptospirosis is an infection of bacterial spirochetes, and it is zoonotic meaning it can be passed to humans. It will also make your dog extremely sick. Yes the vaccine is safe, and it's highly recommended to give it to your dog to prevent her from getting this horrible diseases. I hope this helps!

Hi there and thanks for posting this morning! Leptospirosis is a bacterial disease that comes from widlife urine and causes kidney failure as you already understand. It is an important bacteria to vaccine against every year, especially if you live in a area where there is an increased risk. I would recommend Oscar get vaccinated against leptospirosis. He will need a series of two vaccines- one initially then a booster in 3-4 weeks. After that, he should be vaccinated against letpo every year. If you are referring to the infection leptospirosis, then yes this can be cured though it normally requires a long course of therapy and patients unfortunately can die from this condition if not treated appropriately and in a timely fashion.
