Why is my dog leaking milk and has swollen breasts? Is she pregnant?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Female | unspayed | 5 years and 11 months old

I just noticed that my 6 year old American pitbull mix has been leaking a milky substance from her vaginal area and her last four breast has been swollen and are leaking breast milk I don't know if she is pregnant or if she is going threw a false pregnancy she has gotten caught in March by my unaltered male when she was in heat in March if you could get back to me I would greatly appreciate it

Yes, it certainly does sound possible that Mocha is pregnant since she did mate with a male, although as you mention, a false pregnancy (pseudopregnancy) is also possible. Another possible cause of her vaginal discharge is a pyometra (uterine infection). On average, a dog gestation is 62-65 days. Options at this point are to take Mocha to a vet to confirm the pregnancy or rule out a pyometra through x-rays, ultrasound or blood tests, or closely monitor her for another month to see if she delivers puppies. Should you decide to take the wait and see approach, be sure to feed her puppy food rather than adult dog food, as it is higher in calories to help during a pregnancy. If Mocha does not deliver puppies, she will need to be examined by her vet to discuss management of her condition. All of that said, if Mocha becomes lethargic, stops eating, or experiences changes to her vaginal discharge, she should be examined by a vet immediately to rule out a possible pyometra, as this can become a life threatening emergency. Most of the time, symptoms will resolve with in 2-3 weeks. However, this is likely to recur with subsequent heat cycles. If she is not going to be used for breeding, spaying her will prevent this in the future. If she is acting ill or her symptoms do not resolve, then she will need to see her veterinarian. A dog's pregnancy is about 60-63 days, so if it was about two months ago that she was in heat and got out, it is likely she is close to giving birth if she is pregnant. It would be best to bring her to your local veterinarian to have her examined and the pregnancy confirmed. If she is not pregnant, your vet can also check for other issues such as hormonal changes, tumors or infections that could be causing the change to her mammary glands and vulva, or can let you know if she's ready to go into heat again.

A dog's pregnancy lasts 58-68 days. If Cleo was pregnant, then she would be very close to the end of her pregnancy assuming on the 8th day of mating she become pregnant. It could also be that she is suffering from a false pregnancy. The only way to know for sure is to have her seen by a vet. HI, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Normal pregnancy length in dogs is 60-63 days. If she mated right before adoption then she could be pregnant. Puppy heart beats can be detected on ultrasound at 28 days gestation and we can see their skeletons on X-rays around 50 days. She could be pregnant or she could be suffering from a false pregnancy which occurs after they have a heat cycle from a hormonal imbalance. This imbalance causes the body to think it is pregnant when it actually isn't. The dog can develop mammary glands, produce milk, nest, carry stuffed animals around like babies, act anxious. It resolves with in 2-3 months. I would make an appointment with your Vet to see if you can confirm or deny pregnancy. I wish you the best!
