My dog has kidney/liver failure & pancreatitis. What are his chances?

It looks like he is suffering from some liver and kidney values elevations and he also is anemic. (Low red blood cells). Since I do not not his current condition and how long this has been going on, it is difficult for me to give you a survival time. If this has happened quickly and could be a toxin then with aggressive therapy (hospitalization and IV fluids), then these values could go back to normal and stay that way as long as there wasn't any permanent damage. If this has been chronic and his urine is very dilute then this could be permanent damage to the kidneys which is a much poorer prognosis long term. I would still recommend hospitalization and IV fluids if possible. I would talk to your vet about whether he needs fluids, antibiotics, appetite stimulants, anti-nausea medicine etc. I hope this helps and your sweet baby gets well really soon!

Yes, it was the right decision, without taking him to the vet he would have zero chance to survive, now at least he stands a fighting chance. he is very young so overall i would say his chances are not very good, but you never know, with the correct treatment he might perk back up and survive this.

Poor Bruno! I can see the brown material in his vomit and the very dark stool, which is likely digested blood. This happens because acids build up in the blood when they are not filtered by the kidneys, these acids are very caustic to the tissues of the stomach, and result in ulcers, which bleed. The prognosis depends on the cause of the kidney disease, as certain conditions can be treated and managed for some time, but unfortunately, the prognosis is typically poor to grave. Bruno likely needs fluids to prevent dehydration, and medication to protect the lining of his intestines. The kidneys are also responsible for making a hormone, erythropoeitin, which helps the bone marrow make new red blood cells. Along with the gastric bleeding, this is causing the drop in hemoglobin. The decision is not easy, but humane euthanasia may be an option to consider for Bruno, as kidney failure is known to be painful and very uncomfortable in humans. Unfortunately, treatments such as subcutaneous fluids and toxin binding agents such as Azodyl and Epakatin are palliative at best. I am happy to answer any additional questions you may have.

I am sorry to hear that Chase is so ill. I am not sure what diagnosis the vet gave Chase at this time. It sounds like he has a small liver, but this can be subjective and may or may not indicate a serious underlying illness. Typically when we see a small liver on an x-ray, we recommend doing an ultrasound and potentially fine needle aspirate of the liver if things look suspicious. However, most of the time, a small liver is an incidental finding. I am also unsure what is going on with his GI tract specifically. For instance, was there any foreign material seen in there, an abnormal gas pattern (that would suggest a foreign body), or any masses seen, etc. More information is needed to be able to help answer some of your questions. However we would not be able to tell you your pets prognosis (chances of survival) without first examining your pet. Fir that, I would recommend asking the vet that examined Chase if they can give you some kind of prognosis for him. And hopefully this will help you determine what you would like to do next towards getting him treated appropriately. I wish you all the best moving forward with Chase's care.

I think it is too early to think about euthanasia, however Bucky does need to see a vet/emergency vet again today. He will need to be put on fluids again the very least. Have a talk with the vet about his condition, ask what the chances of him having a good quality of life are and then this will make your decision based on facts rather than feelings. Sometimes it takes a while for a dog to get better and in the meantime we think he is suffering terribly. But there may be a chance to recuperate.

This is a horrible situation for both you and Bucky to be in at the moment, and I'm very sorry!! I'm not sure what brought about his kidney failure or his other symptoms, so I can't say for certain that putting him to sleep is the best option. With treatment from the vet, there may be a possibility he could survive this kidney failure if it is acute, and I would discuss with your vet what they think his chances are for survival. The vet working with him will know best his current situation, and can give you advice for it. Given that he is so young, I would try to give him a chance to make it if possible, but I can also understand not wanting to see him in pain. It is a very hard situation to be in, and while I wish I could give you a definitive answer, I can't without seeing him in person. It would be best to talk this over with your vet before making a final decision. Again, I'm very sorry :-(

The urination doesn't necessarily alarm me - I expect Winston is probably receiving a lot of fluids via an IV catheter, so he is likely producing a lot of urine and may have just really needed to urinate! However, I do worry that he's still vomiting despite his anti-nausea medication. The vet treating him will definitely be the best resource for input on his overall prognosis, since they have the full picture and can examine him in person. I think you're right to be concerned, but I wouldn't be giving up hope - some serious cases of pancreatitis just need several days of hospitalization before they start to turn around. You're doing the right thing by keeping him hospitalized at this point. Fingers crossed for your little guy! I hope this helps.
