My dog has kidney issues and bloody urine. What's the vet cost?

Please keep in mind that costs of procedures vary between areas and clinics within a specific area, so the prices I'm giving you are a very rough estimate. You would have to take Luna into the vet in order to get an exact cost. I imagine they would start with a physical exam, blood tests, and urinalysis. A physical exam can be between $45-55, blood tests could be around $100-$200, and a urinalysis around $50. A fecal exam may be done as well, and that could cost $40. The vet may want to further tests such as x-rays, which can start at $100 or more for one view. Depending on the results found, the vet may want to do further diagnostics. Personally, I would start with a physical exam, blood work, urinalysis, and fecal exam, and may add on additional tests from there depending on the results. Your vet is correct there was microscopic blood in her urine which is abnormal in a free catch sample. There are many reasons for blood in the urine including but not limited to bladder stones (also subclinical infection, a mass, etc.). It will always be up to you though what you think is best for your pet. Your vet is just performing good medicine and making recommendations based on results to make sure your pet is healthy and disease free. I'm sorry to hear about poor Jilly Bean. From the information provided, I can say that chronic cystitis is not yet the definite diagnosis, so I wouldn't consider life-long medication just yet. It is only suspected at this time based on some history and the lack of bacteria seen in the urine. However, to rule-out infection as a cause, a urine culture needs to be done. There are also a few other findings here that warrant further investigation. It appears that the emergency advised follow-up with a specialist and I agree that this is the next best step. ER vets are great at doing some quick tests and providing relief for conditions, but normally don't spend a great deal of time doing all of the testing necessary to make a definite diagnosis. They usually leave this for your regular vet or specialist to do. I recommend at-least having your regular vet follow-up with Jilly Bean. They will not be nearly as expensive and will be able to provide you with a better idea of the necessary treatment and other options if treatment is too expensive. Diarrhea can be the result of an intestinal infection, dietary indiscretion (eating something that upset her gastrointestinal tract), inflammation or even stress. Bloody urine is typically due to a bladder infection, bladder stones, a primary bleeding disorder or in rare cancers bladder cancer.
