Can dogs get kidney infections like humans? What are the symptoms?

I’m sorry to hear this is going on with your dog! A urinary tract infection can certainly make Red lethargic and not feel like himself. The trembling is probably due to her discomfort from the infection. She may also be having a flare up of her back injury as well. It’s hard to say if Red’s kidneys are involved at this point. The only way to know for sure ifnher kidneys are compromised is to run a blood test to check her renal values. This would probably be a good idea to do if you are concerned. I hope this helps. The BUN and creatinine values are extremely high indicating that the kidneys are not working to clear the toxins out of his blood stream and this is very serious and indeed potentially life threatening. The low red blood count or anemia is also a concern and may be linked either to blood borne parasites or kidney failure. Intensive fluid treatment and kidney support is required, in many cases of sudden onset kidney injury in younger dogs, recovery is possible if there is enough normal kidney working in the short term

If she is still not eating then you should take her back to the vet for IV fluid therapy. And more diagnostics. Make sure they did bloodwork to check her kidneys. An abdominal X-Ray or ultrasound may help to diagnose the issue as well. If her kidney enzymes are elevated, that can make her nauseous and not want to eat. IV fluids will help to flush the kidneys. There are also special foods that can help with kidney issues like hills K/D food. If the kidney issue is for sure due to an infection, then hopefully the antibiotics will kick in soon. Sometimes it’s good to give cephalexin with another antibiotic like Baytril if it is a severe infection.

If your vet gave you medicine to give to Buddy you should give it until the meduicine is gone according to the instructions on the label. You can feed Buddy a diet for dogs with kidney disease( such as Hill's k/d available from your vet, for a few weeks which will help his kidneys recuperate, but usually it is not necessary. Feed him normally this weekend and make sure he drinks water and give your vet a call on Monday asking whether there are special instructions.

Hello, unfortunately these may present very similar to one another. Back pain may begin with a very guarded walk and unwillingness to jump or go up on stairs. They may also have referred abdominal pain. Stomach pain may also cause pets not to move much and will likely make them have a poor appetite and even vomiting. You may see an arched back or a "praying position" stance. You may see similar signs with kidney pain, however, you are more likely to see increased drinking, decreased urinations, and severe lethargy. Hope this helps and best of luck.

If she did well on antibiotics, but then regressed, she may need to stay on antibiotics longer. Some dogs remain on antibiotics for 6-8 weeks. If you suspect Daisy is having urinary problems she needs a veterinary exam which would likely in clued analyzing a sample of her urine and possibly blood. This will help to determine if she has a urinary track infection or kidney disease. Sign she may see if Home can include increased frequency and urination increased urinary accidents urinary incontinence or an abnormal color or odor to the urine.
