My dog won't eat Hills k/d for kidney disease. What meat is safe?

Talk to your vet about trying different brands that have prescription kidney diet. But if it is him not eat anything or eat a normal, good quality dog food, it is more important that he eat something. As for treats, focus on low sodium, low protein treats. Dog biscuits are ok, and veggies and fruits that are safe for dogs. Stay away from meaty dog treats or jerky.

I hate to hear that Lily is having an issue eating her food. I would advise too try several renal diets. Royal Canin makes three different formulas. Purina and Science diet also make their own version. The best medicine would be for her to eat only a renal diet but sometimes pets have other ideas. If you cannot find a food that she likes and will readily eat, try mixing in about 25% of the renal diet in with 75% of her normal kibble. Every few days gradually increase the renal food. Even if she never goes on the renal diet fully, it's still better than not eating it at all. Try the canned renal diets as well (once again, all the brands carry this formula). If you want to try making her food at home, you will need to work with a veterinary nutritionist. Renal diets need carefully controlled protein, phosphorus and potassium levels. Low protein diets are best, so see if you can increase the rice portion, and also try to get some fibre (pumpkin/squash) into her. You may try adding a scoop of canned weight loss dog food. This would likely have less calories than chicken or hamburger. You must also remember that dogs try to train us. As long as she is healthy, she will eat when she is hungry. It is OK for most dogs to miss a meal here and there as long as they don’t have a metabolic health concerns (like diabetes). I would suggest trying a large variety of foods to try to entice him to eat. You can boil some chicken for him or even offer him turkey or boiled ground beef. Dogs will go without eating for extended periods of time when they have conditions like renal failure, but it is very important to get them eating again as soon as possible. You can try several varieties of canned food as well. If your dog still refuses to eat you may need to take him to the veterinarian for an appetite stimulant and fluids.
