My dog won't eat prescription diet, only meat. How can I entice her?

Hi. Great job trying to get some weight off of her. A few recommendations....pets are NOT vegan. So it is not recommended for pets to be on this type of diet. If there is a food allergy, she should be on a prescription dog food prescribed by your veterinarian. Pets are usually 93% of the time allergic to the protein source, not carbs. So chicken or beef, etc. Therefore, a different protein source such as fish or other novel proteins are recommended. With weight problems, you will want to cut back, or stop all treats and people food. Some pets don't lose weight if they have metabolic or endocrine conditions. The most common is a low thyroid. So getting her thyroid checked is an important step. Also increase exercise as much as possible. Lastly, have your veterinarian give you a recommendation bases on weight for the amount of dog food she should have per day. Good luck.

One other thing that you could try to help entice him to eat some of the white rice would be to pour some low sodium chicken broth onto it to help it have more flavor and be similar to the chicken that is eating. In general since he will hopefully be on this bland diet for a short period of time, if he continues to eat only the chicken or protein in the meal, this will not cause any significant problems. Unfortunately no, this isn't acceptable. I'm assuming your vet put him on the weight management food for a reason, and by adding in the blue buffalo, you are giving him extra calories he doesn't need. It negates the point of the weight management food. I would just feed him the Hill's only. If he's hungry, he will eat it. I hope this helps.

I would recommend just feeding normal dog food rather than using human food until you can discuss it with your vet. You may even be able to just call the clinic and ask for a prescription for another brand of dog food. Sometimes you have to dry a couple different prescription dog foods to see which one your pet will prefer. Hill's and Royal Canin also have similar prescription dog foods that you could try. If it is temporary (a week or less), its ok for your dog to eat primarily chicken breast or tuna. Try to feed her a little bit of rice mixed with it as well. If she needs to be on medication long term, it would be better to try to formulate a well balanced long term diet that she will eat. Grains are beneficial to dogs, and I only recommend putting a dog on a grain free diet if there is a medical reason why they shouldn't have them, such as allergies. If Adel eats very little of this food, it could be that she doesn't like it and may benefit from another food. I personally recommend feeding dogs Royal Canin or Hill's Science diet. Both are high quality foods that dogs find very tasty; in fact, my dogs eat Royal Canin and love it. You could consider switching her to one of those foods to see if she eats more of it, but if you do make the switch, I would do it slowly to prevent GI upset. You can increase the number of times you feed her, and you can also try to tempt her to eat her food by soaking it in gently warmed low sodium beef or chicken broth. If she does eat it, gradually reduce the amount of broth you add to her food until she is eating the food only.

Ideally, she should be physically examined by your veterinarian to diagnose and treat any illness or injury. As long as she is behaving normally though, you can try warming her food, adding in a bit of baby food or adding in some warm water. You can also offer unflavored PediaLyte. If she is lethargic, vomiting or has diarrhea, then she should definitely be seen by a veterinarian.
