My puppy has kennel cough with wet cough and snot. Is it pneumonia?

Hello, it sounds like Eclaire is overall getting better. The wet cough may be a red herring. As long as her over all health is improving and continues to do so, then you do not need to bring her back to her veterinarian. If she suddenly begins to do worse, no longer wants to eat or develops a worsening cough with nasal discharge then she should be re-evaluated immediately. Hope this helps and best of luck.

Your puppy may have pickd up a respiratory virus or bacteria in the park. This could be the beginning of kennel cough, even though she is not coughing yet. Observer closely, and should the discharge get cloudy or yellowish or if she gets a seriously bad cough, take her in to your vet for an exam. Kennel cough is usually self limiting, and does not need medications unless there is a fever or a seriously debilitating cough. She will also need to be seen by a vet if she gets lethargic, stops eating or drinking or appears obviously ill.

If she is eating well/nursing well, and going to the bathroom normally in addition to acting fine, she may be OK. I just worry about how young she is though. I wouldn't let this go on too long. If she were to get sick it's much harder on her because her immune system is so immature. I would take her in when you can to see the vet. They can check her lungs and make sure the congestion is just in her upper respiratory tract. Tiny puppies can also have a condition cause cleft palate, for example, and that can cause them to inhale the milk when nursing. This can cause pneumonia, so again, I'd have her examined as soon as you're able. In the meantime, taking her in the bathroom when members of the household shower can help clear out her upper respiratory react, acting like a humidifier with babies that have stuffy noses.

If your puppy is coughing, but otherwise feels happy, is eating, playing and very active it could indeed be kennel cough, or lung worm infection or other lung infection. I suggest you take him to a vet for an exam, and since the coughing is excessive, the vet can prescribe an antitussive, antibiotics if needed and anti-inflammatory medication, if necessary.

Although there are many causes of coughing (heart disease, collapsing trachea, pneumonia, etc.), the most likely cause for the coughing given Emmie's history is 'Kennel Cough' or Infectious tracheitis. This is a viral infection that causes irritation in the trachea and a cough. It can become very severe such that the coughing prevents eating/sleeping and leads to weight loss and depression. If the coughing is severe you can ask your vet about anti-tussives (anti-cough medication). Sometimes this infection leads to a secondary bacterial infection, and the cough becomes 'wet' and at this stage antiboitics are required. I recommend a visit to your vet, x-rays might be required depending on how the lungs sound when your vet listens to the chest. Best of luck with Emmie.

Kennel Cough is easily spread from dog to dog. Given the pup's age, it should be examined by your veterinarian to confirm the diagnosis. Left untreated, kennel cough can progress to pneumonia which can be life threatening in puppies.

Congrats on your new dog, but I'm sorry Willow is sick! Kennel cough doesn't have a cure, the medications are used to lessen the severity of the symptoms, but it sounds like the disease is getting a bit worse. I would rest her tonight, keep her in a well humidified area, and use a harness instead of a collar when you take her out to potty to minimize coughing. You can also try bringing her into the bathroom with you when you shower as the steam may help with her congestion. Try gently warming up really smelly wet food to tempt her to eat. Dogs won't eat if they can't smell their food, so gently warming it may entice her to eat. I would have her seen by a vet again in the morning since her symptoms have become more severe.
