My dog has kennel cough. Can he get vaccinated or needs antibiotics?

I generally recommend waiting about 2 weeks after recovery from kennel cough to give a dose of the kennel cough vaccine. As long as your vet feels that Dallas has a clean bill of health, it should be perfectly fine for him to get the vaccine anytime now. I'm glad to hear that he's made a full recovery and is doing well!

The cough can linger for a couple weeks. If he is otherwise acting normal than it may just take a little more time for the cough to resolve. If you notice any lethargy, anorexia, difficulty breathing, or fever than I he should definitely be rechecked.

Kennel cough is usually a self limiting infection and in 1 to 2 weeks time will completely disappear without any treatment. However sometime an anti inflammatory medication and an antibiotic treatment is indicated (and probably this was your case). Your puppy should gradually improve but if you do not see an improvement in the next 24-36 hrs I recommend a recheck at your veterinarian, earlier if she is getting worse. In the meantime I suggest to use a harness instead of a collar to walk her outside to avoid pushing on the inflamed trachea and make her cough even more. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! After the treatment for kennel cough if the dog is doing well there is no further treatment. He may have a lingering cough when excited but that is normal. He can have his regular vaccines 2 weeks after the treatment was started. The Vanguard 7 is not a vaccine for kennel cough however. That is a distemper/parvo/hepatitis combination. I would recommend getting a kennel cough vaccine to lessen the severity if kennel cough should he come into contact with it again. Kennel cough is usually a self limiting disease. Unless Anubis has a very bad cough or discharge from his nose or a fever, there is usually no treatment necessary. If the cough is bad, you can give him some OTC cough medicine such as Robitussin provided your veterinarian finds it suitable for your dog. Give your veterinarian a call and get permission to use it. Your vet knows your dog's health history and therefore can best assess the need.

This sign could be compatible with an upper respiratory tract inflammation/infection. There are different upper respiratory tract infections possible and unfortunately kennel cough is only one (although the most common) of them. A clinical examination at your local veterinarian is essential to confirm these clinical suspicions and treat appropriately. Antibiotics may be needed.
