My dog has kennel cough. Can I give cough medicine before 12 hours?

Oh no, poor Rosie! I would not give her any more Robitussin, as too much is not safe for dogs. Kennel cough is a self limiting disease that last three to four weeks, and while medications can help with the symptoms, they will not completely prevent the symptoms of it. I would have Rosie seen by a vet, who can prescribe medications are safe to give her. There are some things you can do for her at home. Any dog with kennel cough should be isolated for at least two weeks, possibly longer depending on the severity of the infection. Keep her in a well-humidified area, and use a harness instead of a collar to minimize coughing. Rest her for at least seven days to minimize irritation of the airways caused by excessive coughing. You can bring Rosie into the bathroom with you while you have a shower, as the steam may help with the respiratory irritation. I recommend having her seen by a vet tomorrow.

It could be caused by many organisms: Bordatella, viruses, other bacteria and mycoplasmas. It is usually self limiting in a healthy dog and may take 2 weeks. Over the counter human medications are not recommended for pets to suppress the cough. I recommend calling your Vet in the morning and see if they will prescribe cough tabs with out seeing him. A lot of the type Vets put them on a course of antibiotics, but would likely want to see him first. I wish you and Shasta the best of luck!

Hello. If your veterinarian specifically did not recommend giving the two medications separately, then it is fine to give them together. We often will "bundle" medications just to make things less stressful for our pets & for us. So yes, you can give them at the same time. Expectorants aid in the clearance of mucus from the airways, so yes Wilco's coughing up mucus is due to that medication. I would not give the dex/guaf early, it's very important to take the drugs as the vet has prescribed.

I would take Kai into a vet first thing in the morning. Tonight, rest him. If he's congested, try bringing him into the bathroom when you take a shower to see if the steam helps. You can also put him in a room with a humidifier. In the morning, the vet can confirm he has kennel cough, and can give medication to help with his symptoms. It is best to give the next dose at his regularly scheduled time unless the dose you just gave was very close to it. 8-10 hours apart should be fine to get him back on his regular medical schedule.
