What do supplement levels 1, 2, 3 mean for my dog's joint pain?

Without knowing how much of the food you are feeding each dog, it would be hard to tell how much they are getting, however, 750-1500mg of glucosamine daily is the typical dosage (depending on your dog's weight) so if you are feeding around 2 cups of food to each daily it should be enough without an extra supplement- however, if the dogs still seem painful or sore, it is always a good idea to check with your vet and see if they'd benefit from other supplements in addition to their food. I'm not sure what linetos acid is. Are you thinking of linoleic acid? If so, that is an omega-6 fatty acid which can be helpful with joint inflammation and other inflammatory processes of the body. omega-3 and 6 fatty acids are common in joint and other senior dog supplements as a way to help improve overall health.

Dasuquin with MSM and Cosequin DS Plus MSM (both by Nutramax Labs) are excellent products. I prefer these because it is the same company that makes the human product, Cosamin, and one of the few companies that submits its products for outside testing to verify ingredients. You can start there, and adjust as needed depending on how Ember reacts. Generally, you'll start with a loading dose that is higher than the daily dose for 1-2 weeks, and then reduce down to the recommended dose after that. Arthritis is definitely a possibility. You could start him on a joint supplement, like Dasuquin and see if that helps. Your vet could also take an x-ray to evaluate for arthritis and then start him on a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory, like Deramaxx, Previcox, Rimadyl, etc. NSAIDs help relieve the discomfort associated with arthritis.

If supplements alone haven't helped, it may be time to add in a pain medication or other joint medications to help relieve Halo's discomfort. Unfortunately, these do require a trip to the vet in order to be prescribed, but it's a good idea to schedule a vet visit anyway to monitor Halo's joint health and any progression of disease. Your vet may recommend regular bloodwork and X-rays to watch the hips for any additional deterioration so that medications and joint supplements can be adjusted as needed. Changing supplement types in addition to this, such as adding in fish oil and vitamin E, Green-Lipped mussel, or another glucosamine/chondroitin combo may also help, however, consulting with your vet first to make sure there is no interaction with other medications is best.

Great question! I really like Dasuquin and Cosequin as joint supplements for dogs. I have found that in senior dogs with arthritis, Dasuquin is a great option because it contains ASU, which stands for Avocado & Soybean Unsaphonifiables. ASU is seen as considerably more effective in regards to repairing stiff, sore, and injured joints. For Oscar, I'd recommend Dasuquin. I hope this helps!
