How fast can a dog with IVDD go from limping to paralysis?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua (Smooth Coat) | Female | unspayed | 5 years and 2 months old | 12 lbs

Ivdd- 6 year old Dash hound Chihuahua mix. Went from walking to paralyzed in 3 weeks. I know there are 5 stages or IVDD however, is it possible to go from limping to stage 5 in such a short period.

Hello, thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I am sorry to hear that this happened to Gracie.

Yes, unfortunately, dog can go from walking to paralysis is a very short time. Sometimes it happens immediately within seconds. Dachshunds and Dachshund mixes are EXTREMELY susceptible to this issue. If you have not taken her to see a neurologist I suggest you do so. Also, you may want to take her to an acupuncturist as I have seen this work miracles in helping to restore mobility.

Hope this helps. Best wishes.
